Simon Pegg Posted Sun Oct 7 01:29:20 BST 2001 by 'Insomniac'

Apparantly, everyone hates him, or at least regards him with cynically raised eyebrows. Why? Is it his stand-up, Spaced, or is he just an unpleasant person to meet?

Where have you got the idea everyone hates him? I think the original idea of the "What is the point of Simon Pegg?" thread was to point out how mediocre he was. I have no strong feeling either way, but some people who kicked up a fuss on that thread clearly did :))

I thought the original idea was to show how fans can't take a bit of criticism of their idols, and at the same time can't back up why they like them so much. (Perhaps we need a 'What is the point of "What is the point of Simon Pegg"?' thread...)

Well, I think he's good, so nyeur.

That became the point, I think, when so many people expressed their outrage at the thread without backing up any of their arguements.

As I said, I can't be stirred to have an opinion either way.

I expected Spaced to be better than it was so I'm more disapointed with Pegg in the same way I'm disapointed in Stevenson. Though Pegg has a face which I can't take to however talented he is or isn't

But thats my view

i thought the idea was to show that amusing but completely meaningless comments can be debated endlessly on this forum.

We can prove this without being provoked, y'know.

he was good in band of brothers though

I saw him do stand up in Portsmouth once and was sat right at the front. He had engaged in some banter with others in the crowd and so when he mentioned by name a pub in Gloucester which I too used to frequent I considered it fair game to mention that I too knew of the establishment. He called me a cunt. That put me off him a bit. Still liked Spaced though, although I did once phone the wedgewood rooms in portsmouth and complain they shouldn't have him on a comedy bill because he's a racist.

Why? Out of spite or he actually is?

no, but he is a paedophile.

arf arf! he totally ruined the bit where he was "acting" in the field with David Swimmer. I expected a Big Train sketch there and then.

Why pick him?

i dont know, because he auditioned and they thought he was right for the part? i doubt anyone doing the auditions would know him from adam and you cant blame him or them for your preconceptions.

i blame the casting directors for picking a comic actor to play a serious role. surely they'd read his CV? what made it worse was you just knew his bleached spiky hair was lurking under that big helmet.

if they were going to pick a comic, why not Roy Chubby Brown? "It's a fence, you daft cunt", he'd say. And he suits a WWII helmet!

I thought his "American" accent was waste of time as well. You notice he didn't speak much and hovered around the back like a lost puppy. A purpose decision by Speilberg and Hanks?

P.S I think people take the piss out of Pegg because its too easy!?

His nickname at RADA was "Taken downa".

I don't mind him at all in Spaced or Big Train, i think he is fine comic actor. but he looked out of place in a big US war maxi-series.

yes because robbie coltrane did such a terrible job in cracker didnt he. this is made pretty much with american audiences in mind, who would have no idea who he was. its not like he has had enough to do yet for anyone to judge his suitability for the role. he has said one line and, as someone pointed out, hovered around behind david schwimmer for a bit

well, he did get to get out of that jeep and hand the hero chap a letter, salute and then walked stiffly back to that jeep. on this is your life "Simon Pegg", when they bring David Shchwimmer to the studio, will they show The Fence clip?

Michael Aspel: "You met in summer 2000, filming the multi award winning Band of Brothers, the last time you saw him you were in a field, but we've brought him here tonight. Ex-Friend star David Shcimmwer!"

Simon greets him like long lost "brother"

If it was big Darren Boyd, maybe that would have been okay. He's got a big Arkansas jaw on him.

but fine, it's made for America, but i'm watching it in Britain and, for me, it slighty tainted my viewing.

as for Robbie Coltrane in cracker, i don't think it's the same thing at all. he wasn't just a comic actor who suddenly appeared in a serious drama.

we're going to have to agree on this. i'm right and everyone else in the world is completely wrong.

So, one of the problems is that a comic actor miscast in a serious role should not be skulking behind DAVID bloody SCHWIMMER?

Funnily enough, i thought Schwimmer was ideal for that role, because he was a twat.
