No. We're going to Shanghai.
Ahh, but who remembers him when he was in indie-punksters Snug?
C-list celeb fact time: I once got backstage at a Snug gig and ate jam doughnuts with them (how rock and fucking roll!), including Mr Harcourt. I also still own a picture of a Scary Sheep he drew for my fanzine (called Scary Sheep). When the inevitable happens and he makes it big I shall sell said scrawl for a million pounds.
I also have a signed copy of Snug's first 7", but then ALL those were signed!

Were they on The Jack Docherty Show (or the Not The JDS, when Graham Norton presented it)? Doing a song about a balloon or something?
There is a very small chance that I might have made some/all of this up in my head.

You're probably referring to Midget, the very similar band (they, Symposium and some other young noisy indie kids had their own "scene" for five minutes in 1997), for they had a song called Invisible Balloon. Coincidentally, I also have pictures of Scary Sheep drawn by 2/3 of Midget. No one more famous than Midget or Snug ever drew Scary Sheep for me.
Did Snug do 'Beatnik Girl'? If so, I remember them.

I think you're right. The name does ring a bell, though. What songs *did* they do?

The aforementioned "Beatnik Girl" was probably their most famous, as the video starred Melinda Messenger. Other Snug singles included My Girl (Keith) and Ode To The World. I think they released an album that bombed, too, but I'd lost interest by then. I was pretty surprised when Ed Harcourt started taking the "serious" pop music world by storm!
Right. I've done some research now (possibly should have done it sooner, then I could have saved you some effort. Sorry!).
Snug have a website, on which you can hear clips of most of their songs; including Beatnik Girl, which I think I vaguely remember. I am also proud to report that they were on the Jack Docherty Show on no fewer that TWO occasions, so maybe I haven't gone completely mad after all.
I did confuse them with Midget songs-wise though, but it's so easily done.
I have a similar problem with Kate Thornton and Lisa Rogers, which is why, when my friend and I persuaded Ralf Little to talk to us in Edinburgh two weeks ago, I tried to convince him that his girlfriend was the former when he is actually going out with the latter. Ah well...
"I felt so good, inside, when I saw her Beatnik behind, and I knew she was the one, 'cos she was reading 'Naked Lunch'..."
PS - what did instrument Ed Harcourt play in Snug? I seem to remember their singer being called James Dean.

Too tired to look it up myself, sorry.
