Seinfeld scheduling lies Posted Tue Sep 4 23:55:40 BST 2001 by 'tim_e'

A few weeks ago, the radio times had a useless comedy poll. Seinfeld didn't perform very well, and they wondered why. Lots of people wrote in to point out that due to the way it had been scehduled, it had no chance to build up an audience and become popular.

'A BBC2 spokesman replies: "Seinfeld has a loyal but small audience, even when it has been played in a consistent but earlier slot. BBC2 is a mainstream channel and its peaktime slots need to be of broader appeal."'

"a consistent but earlier slot"? What does that mean, 11.00 p.m. for two consecutive weeks? Or did I miss the series that was on at 9.00 on Fridays?

And as for "BBC2 is a mainstream channel", I thought it was supposed to be aimed at 25-32 year olds, or some similar bunch of twattery. Or do they just twist it to suit themselves?

When the BBC first bought the show, it was screened at around 9:30pm. I guess that the viewing figures must have been poor, so rather than let it build up a following (which it almost certainly would have done had it been allowed the chance to do so) they shunted it off to the graveyard slot. At least they continue to show it, probably just so they can brag to international industry peeps about it. Or something. It's a shame - it genuinely is one of the best US sitcoms ever. But hey - the cast of Friends are more attractive!

Perhaps once the Beeb have finished screening this final series they'll run it from the start in primetime, perhaps Mondays at 9:30pm?

Or...

i don't really mind that seinfeld is shown late. if people can't;
a) stay up until midnight
or
b) set the video
then they probably wouldn't like it anyway.

Meanwhile, the fact that Seinfeld in on Paramount at 5.30pm, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK is one of the best things ever. Frankly.

Especially as it has enabled me to have every episode shown so far committed to VHS. Hurrah indeed.

The problem these days is that if something doesn't perfom well in the ratings in the first two weeks it is deemed a failure (see the Simpsons on BBC1)
But audiences need time to get used to a show, get to like the characters etc (especially with comedy)
So many successful shows have done nothing for the first couple of series and it is only in repeats or extra eps that they have "performed"
When will these twats realise this and have faith in good shows?

I'd still like to know why you can't get Seinfeld videos/DVDs in the UK. Other than American tapes via Amazon or whatever. I've posted about this before, but does anyone know? It must be a legal thing.

Yeah, it's that guy who plays the slap bass guitar in between every fucking scene. He only licensed the music for the US.

(Note: if this were true, we could get a non slapping version released and the programme would be truly perfect).

Also, why haven't Channel 4 stepped in and nabbed it off the BBC? Sandwich it between Friends & South Park on a Friday night and I would've thought you'd have a ratings winner. Or is this impossible for some reason? Perhaps Steve Berry could shed some light here?

Really? Wonder if we can all have a whip-round and buy the rights back.

Does anyone know which episodes were released in the US - whole series or just best ofs?

A search on 'Seinfeld' on amazon.com returns only results for Jerry Seinfeld's standup act for both DVD and VHS. So, none I'd imagine.

Possibly because they deem it too 'old'. References to laser pointer key-rings are soooo 1997*. A crushing blow, as gathering lots of C4-Friday-night-type-viewers would surely lead to the aforementioned release of every episode of it on VHS/DVD. Like with Friends**.

(*Or whenever.)

(** Meta-comment: Is Friends the only long-running US sitcom to get every episode released sequentally on tape in the UK? I can't think of any more - The Simpsons only gets those pointless vaguely-connected-episodes compilations.)

FYI, The Simpsons season 1 DVD box set is released on September 24th. Hurrah!

I know, but I don't think much of Season One. I think showing it on BBC1 led to the general public thinking 'Is that it? What's on ITV?'. So, hurroo.

The forthcoming Futurama Season 1 DVD, however. Hurrah indeed.

Seinfeld always seems pretty timeless to me - you could believe it was made in about 1976 or something, until you see an obvious reference.

I bet BBC2 never repeats it again after this final series is aired. Anyone know the economics/logistics involved in C4 buying the rights afterwards, and how likely it is to happen?

Sorry Mike, thought I'd made it clear I was having a dig at Mark King (or whoever it was that did the 'incidental' music).

For the record, I have no idea why Seinfeld hasn't been released on video in the UK. But I suspect it might be linked to poor sales of 'Frasier' videos over here - they seem to target a similar market...

They've just released The Complete Series 1 of Frasier though. So the others must've done OK.

Anyone know how the Larry Sanders vid did?

Any connected media types out there know if any British TV channels are planning on showing the Larry David thing Curb Your Enthusiasm? Or failing that even anywhere on the internet where I can read a transmission of the script?
