Auntie Rotter Posted Sun Sep 2 12:09:41 BST 2001 by Clinton Morgan

Just brought The Best of Sellers LP from Oxfam. A 10 incher with a photo of Peter blowing onto the flying lady of a Rolls Royce. Only listened to the first side so far and what stood out for me was the track "Auntie Rotter". For those of you who don't know it is a 'Listen With Mother' type parody of a sadistic nature. Sample lines, "Does Mummy have her back towards you? Then take out your swords and stab her in the back." and (my favourite) "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have two daddies?" If you listen to this track you can hear the correct way to do dark comedy. For above all, it sticks to the remit that comedy is about being funny. Funny Ha Ha, that is.

Indeed. It's a beauty. While you're there, you might wish to check the writers' credit. Monkhouse/Goodwin. That's Bob Monkhouse and Denis Goodwin. As you were.

A childhood favourite on scratchy 33 RPM 7" vinyl.

"Up on a chair behind the door
Hey diddle diddle
Here comes poppa so up wiv yer chopper
And split im dahn the middle..."

Probably the reason I've never had a problem with Bob Monkhouse. He wrote that and drew the Beano. The man can't be all bad...

I knew he was a cartoonist but didn't know that. What did he draw for The Beano and what era?

Can't find any corroboration on the web - the net's always very poor on print cartoon funnies - but I'm pretty sure he did a stint on Roger The Dodger while still a teenager. He's mentioned it in interviews before.

He definitely drew the caricatures of famous comedians for the title animations of his chat show, too.
