Bet it has lots of Filmfour shit in the running.

If 'Billy Liar' isn't there, C4 will have confirmed their general uselessness.

Although I do understand this is one list that will change based on user input (as opposed to it being a "shuffle the pack" scenario as before).

Anyone remember 'Movie Collector'. Now there was a proper film magazine. As a Powell and Pressberger fan the list only has 'A Matter of Life and Death'. What about 'The Red Shoes', 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' or even 'Black Narcissus'. Foreign cinema is quite poor as is silent cinema. I suggested they include 'Ordet' and 'Greed'. Few may have seen these films but at least someone reading the list may think, "Hey I haven't heard of that. I'll go check it out." Luis Bunel is only represented by 'Belle De Jour', 'Un Chien Andalou' does not even make the list. Usual 'Tarantino Is God' magazine rubbish. For fuck's sake even 'The Fast Show' name-checked Andrei Tarkovsky (see 'Mirror', it pisses on 'Get Carter' and 'Blue Velvet'). The problem with 100 Best list is that it takes the fun out of discovering for yourself. It also the adds the pressure of "Oh I must see those..." Rather than savouring what you have already before you collect the next item. If Pink Floyd fans cannot agree on what was their best era then how can anyone agree on best film. Oh fuck it'll be 'Star Wars'.

Well, you'll be extra pleased to know that Channel 4 you can buy all 100 films directly from Channel 4! So obviously, the criteria for getting into the top one hundred was that it a/ released on video and b/ not deleted.

Hopefully not that high, as I've never understood the appeal of it.

I want to know where Citizen Kane is going appear (as a Film Student for the past zillion years I've been told it's the best film in the world).

Whatever's No1 will probably be embarrassing.

You've been a film student that long and never *seen* Citizen Kane? Fucking hell.

I have seen it, I just think it's one of those "Only film students think it's that good"

However I've never seen Jaws cos:

1. It's about a shark
2. In a fight between a town full of people and a fish my moneys on the townfolk.

I have seen the "very clever zooming out while tracking back with the camera", and any A level student with a camera can do that.

I just wanted to know how far up CK will get.

see they had a problem here, cos you know that all "wine bar" media types that compile this sort of list believe memento is "best film ever", "really very good indeed" only its not available to buy yet. in the end they just went without it. and good on em i say, for unrelentingly going for that trashy buck. oh the pricks, the pricks

I recently watched Crouching Tiger... And I'd just like to pose the question, do you reckon the peeps who said that this film was "Brilliant, Amazing..." blah blah blah have ever actually watched a film before. Don't get me wrong, CT,HD is a nice film and all, but... it's just a glorified kung fu movie, v v well made etc, just not that great.

Fish point, yes. Crash zoom thing, no.

It's a conscious Hitchcock reference, and thus isn't meant to be stunning in itself.

What's clever is the staggered close up (using wipe pans of colour coded beachwear) beforehand that builds up anticipation of
the pull zoom to come (it feels like you're climbing up some steps to slide down the other side). There's also the skill in the deployment of the zoom in the context of the scene - to express Brody's helpless isolation.

Any sixth form student with a camera can take a picture of a cock too, that doesn't mean Robert Mapplethorpe's rubbish.

The crash zoom thing pisses me off because people go on & on about it (tho' no one told me it was from Hitchcock)

Maplethorpe, yeah, but anyone who takes a picture of a cruxifix in piss & calls it Piss Christ, to me, is a genius. & he did P. Smiths first album.
