Internet Comedy Apparently Becomes Another Jongleurs-type Comedy Supermarket Posted Thu Aug 23 22:27:50 BST 2001 by 'Quatermass In The Pits'

I don't know who Rob Sedgebeer is. I don't really have much of an idea about SOTCAA either except that it was a frequently irritating but worthy/bollocky stream of free-thought. But I do know that we live in ruthlessly market-led times, far more so than in the 80s.

I've got a feeling that NOT BBC and co are eyeing up the possibilities of some major REAL MONEY sponsorship and the likes of thorn-flesh bolshy's like SOTCAA are an unwanted shower on this particular parade.

So as the grip of the free market tightens around the neck of internet comedy, remind yourselves of Jongleurs and its delightful brand of prescription led chuckles 'You will sit here' 'You will Laugh NOW' 'You will not talk to your friends in the middle of an act' 'You will not put the performers off by looking them in eye' 'You will dress smartly' 'YOU WILL BEHAVE'.

Hey Ho. Look out for Mr Sedgebeer's name on a forthcoming Channel 4 comedy pilot coming to a TV screen near you ever so soon.

Shit, if only I hadn't let my Soho House membership lapse! It opens doors, I'm telling you!!!!!

Lets see that again in slow motion.....

Yes. well, I made the mistake of going to see a comedian in a small pub, and I got Neil Mullarkey. On the other hand, I went to a Jongleurs and laughed. I get your point about it being a bit of a Wetherspoons venue, but it 'delivered the goods' as it were.

As I mentioned in another thread, I've only been reading the site and forum for about a month now, so whilst I really do like what I've read, I don't really feel I can get to attached to it. However, what I will say is:

Dont be so bloody precious about these turn of events. Unless this is the only site you frequent, you might have noticed that the same bloody thing is happening to the whole internet. EVERYTHING is being streamlined, and if you want to make money, you will have to conform to what the mainstream want. For everything else, webspace ain't that expensive. If you really care about this site going bye bye, why don't you start a fund, instead blaming Mr Sedgebeer?

God knows what the politics behind the move are, and the hijacking of the forum is a shit move on Mr Sedgebeer's part, but I can see threads going on and on......

Another satisfied customer.

Fuck me! And there was me thinking that Roibbie Williams and Ali G just got lucky! Thanks Mr Qwerty. I know what to do now. See you in Davos, buddy.

Because the SOTCAA people are probably bright enough to make a go of it without relying on 50p donations from the likes of me. Then again, now that you have instructed me, perhaps I will sell a few of my Steptoe and Son original draft scripts to fund all the comedy of the internet. Yes. That is the way forward. Yes.

You get the feeling we wouldn't enjoy each other's company if we met?

I think you should both get out a bit more.

I expect you know all about that sort of thing, Mr Candle.

My Dad's bigger than all your dads.

Alternatively, just stop it. Your argument isn't nearly as car-crash compelling as the one on the 'The Comedy Forum' thread.

I think you're reading free market conspiracies where there are none.

Isn't it possible that Rob's just pissed off?

So what was the point of your original post then? You can't say, "Fuck rob for selling out to 'the man'", and then say that you don't have to worry about helping the site out because they obviously have a plan, which they may well do, but does it deserve your pointless conspiracy theory?

>You get the feeling we wouldn't enjoy each other's company if we met?

Oh, and I was so looking forward to meeting you as well!

Tomorrow at 4, Bricklayers Arms, Balham High Rd. See yeah there, matey... except I won't be there. I'll be at another pub. But as someone else said, we should both get out more don't you think?
