Tony Newley said to me.... Posted Tue Aug 21 15:33:23 BST 2001 by 'Jake Thingy'

Just caught a glimpse of this now deceased light entertainer in some silly old film -- can't think why I've been accused of looking like him, in the past. Not the way he is now, obviously.

Was that film the one with the stupid long name that's all about him trying to find happiness and copulating with as many women as he can find and turning into a robot or something? That is a terrible, terrible film.

"Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness?"

He was producer/director/lead actor,etc.

But he co-wrote the Bond theme "Goldfinger".

He was also one of the greatest song and dance men that we produced.

I saw him at the London Palladium in the mid-70s and he rocked.

Also married to Joan Collins. Also songwriter with Leslie Bricusse - wrote and starred in Dr Doolittle. I think also wrote 'Stop The World I Want To Get Off' but I culd be wrong.

Anthony Newley was brilliant. One of those genuinely multitalented all-round entertainers that the world seems to be singularly unable to produce any more. His 1960s comedy series "The Strange World Of Gurney Slade" is an undiscovered masterpiece.

And yes, he did write "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off".

He also did a comedy album with Peter Sellers called "Fool Britannia" which was recorded in 1963. You need to know about the Profumo scandal to get the jokes.

"The Honourable Member has committed a grave Miss Keeler with misdemeanor..."
