I loved that film. Lumpy in places, but swollen with affection for its subject. It's a fictionalised biopic based on the life of Carole King, and should be played on an unending loop in front of Todd Velvet Goldmine Idiot until he learns how to do this genre properly.
And J. Mascis says "Yeah" in it. How cool's that?
By the way, if you buy the soundtrack, it features the film versions of all the songs, except God Give Me Strength, which is the demo version by Costello & Bacharach.
I've forgotten who sings it in the film, doing a Marnie Nixon for Ileana Douglas, but the movie take of that song pisses all over Elvis and Burt. And you can't get it anywhere.
That makes me sad.
>Not a comedy but a wonderful film directed by Allison Anders and starring Illena Douglas as a Carol King style songwriter. I saw this once in High Wycombe but I have not seen it ever again. It appears to have been lost and forgotten which is a great shame. The songs on the film were written by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach. "God Give Me Strength" being one of them. I wish this was on video or shown on television. It would have a wide appeal. The reason I post to this forum is because I know that Andrew Collins is a contributor and I assume/hope he can shed some light on the matter.
Yes, it's beautiful, a combination of romantic comedy and a pastiche of a pop history documentary, which really fucking doesn't do it any justice as a description, please ignore that, oh God. It's available on DVD in the US and is on my shopping list.
I agree, it's a fab film and a wonderful soundtrack. Sadly I left the soundtrack back in Adelaide when I came here. I miss it actually...

Off-topic: I was using cyberturf for webspace but they deleted my "blue job" thing, which means they must have listened to it long enough to hear the "fuck." So I replaced it with something pointlessly obscene and they deleted the whole account...
I think it's Shawn Colvin. She's a singer-songwriter. "She must be genuine, she's got a website" - http://www.shawncolvin.com/
