Has anyone else noticed the site doesn't work anymore! On thecabal mailing list, people were quite unfairly giving him some grief and so I guess his threats to remove the site were not just childish banter.
Or maybe, it is just down at the moment! It would be a huge pity, as it was a fucking wicked site.
Come Back Neil...we miss you!!!

So it doesn't. Still, I can't say I blame him, given the amount of grief he was getting.

I would't be surprised if it returns after the whole Brass Eye thing has died down. Hope so, anyway.

It does, actually. The cookdandbombd.co.uk address is fucked at the minute, but the site can still be got here http://chilled.cream.org

> On thecabal mailing list,

Um, no. The Morris lists have actually been very supportive this week, which was surprising considering how they fell so hard for my silly hoax thing. The people who have given me the most grief are actually the users of this forum. For example, I had dozens of attempts to hack into my computer after posting here earlier in the week. The way IP addresses are displayed so openly, coupled with the fact that a lot of media people post here, makes this forum a security nightmare.

> and so I guess his threats to remove the
> site were not just childish banter.

Yeah, cheers for that. The reason I talked about closing the site was because of the demonistaion and bullying I received from users of this forum. I've had countless nasty spiteful emails and repeated attempts to hack into my computer. I really am sick of taking shit for basically trying to run a good site. We all are. TJ left the site two weeks ago because of the amount of abusive email he was getting (over 100 in a day, I believe). Do you really think it's "childish" of us not to want to put up with this amount of persecution?

May I just remind you that the site is FREE, there is not one single banner on it, and it was updated more than a lot of commercial sites. While we could have *EASILY* made a small fortune out of it over the last two years we've actually stuck to our principles and been LOSING MONEY running it. So have the people who've been kind enough to donate webspace and so on. So I'm actually *paying* for this abuse, incredible!

I don't know whether the site has a future now or not. The general concensus seems to be that we should shut it down for a few months and see how we feel after that.

Personally I think it's probably time I stopped spending so much time on something which has mostly brought me grief, and focus instead on getting a job. Maybe I'll feel better tommorrow night when I get some toke and can be more detached and reflective about the whole thing. I *do* love working on the site, building it up, and learning new techniques and programming languages to improve it, but ultimately I don't need this sort of hassle.

What sort of thing are you looking for, Neil?

Well, glutton for punishment that I am, a website job.

I don't think I have much chance of getting into websites for a living though, as I'm all self-taught and have no formal qualifications. Also, commercial web design is very much in it's infancy in Northern Ireland, and I've been told that only "graphics people" need apply. Shame, as I've spent an awful lot of time lately learning backend stuff like web programming and database languages and find them damn bloody interesting and useful. However, the current trend is for terrible looking flash sites that fill a fraction of the screen and take an hour to load.

With those interests/abiilties, you should be able to earn about 30K a year, maybe as much as 60 or 70. Spend a few years getting any engineering type degree and you'll be made.

Odd, isn't it, the way information is slowly being shuffled off the web in favour of "nice pictures?" The whole thing is being made into a massive tabloid, which might explain the kneejerk reactions and Daily Mail style opinions of a lot of the posters here recently.

There are tonnes of web development/database integration jobs in Dublin, and ability is way more important than qualifications.

But don't move here; it sucks somewhat!

It's a real shame you've been hassled by assholes. You've put time and effort into giving people lots of stuff to enjoy.

I think there's room for both but I agree that it's a shame that most "big businesses" are opting for the latter rather than the former (or, if they're offering good information resources, they're charging a premium for them - cf. The Times archives).

The best web sites are always those that enable the visitor (and I mean that not in the corporate sense of the word "enable") - the peer-to-peer sites such as AmIHotOrNot or community-based sites where there's actually something constructive being done - to create stuff. Napster and so on may have gone down the dumper but it was a tremendously successful site, driven by the backend rather than the pretty animations.

That said, there's some good stuff out there using Flash and it is possible to integrate it with backend stuff. Worth investigating. Good luck, anyway.

Cheerio

it's easily the best site on the net. it would be a terrible (and ironic) shame if the best chris morris site was shut because of an argument over a new episode of brass eye.

> PLEASE don't close the site!

Thanks, and all, but I don't want this turning into a "ooh isn't that site great" thread.

It may be more constructive if you all looked at the way this forum is going at the minute instead. The IP addresses being publically displayed, for instance, really does need sorting out as quickly as possible. Even hiding them in the source code again would be a step in the right direction. As it is now, it's far too tempting for script kiddies and wannabe hackers.

The tendency for the whole forum to jump on one person (e.g. Simon Pegg, Charlie Brooker, Steve Berry etc.) is also terribly annoying, and not at all productive.

I would also agree with whoever said that anonymous posters should have "I'm the KING of this fucking forum" tagged onto their posts. Posting anonymously, or kicking off your post using the word "allegedly" is just an indication that you're a cowardly cunt who hasn't the courage of his convictions, and you should be marked out as such.

Finally, it was terribly sad to see so many people running around here over the last day or two pretending to be too cool to care about the probable cancellation of the Brass Eye Special. The BEST thing about this forum, and the site it's attached to, has always been the fact that the users didn't actually care how "geeky" they looked. Shame to see that starting to die.

Cheerio all.

Characterising this forum as a single psychological entity with one opinion on everything is just mad. I agree with some of what I read here, and I hold some other bits in contempt. Yes there are going to be some sods who say things you don't agree with, but it's a bit strange to plead with "the forum" to reform its behaviour or opinions. Post your opinions. Read some alternative ones. Have a think about them, or ignore the ones that just seem pathetic. That's how it works.

Do you like Chris Morris?

Weren't you the chap bemoaning the entrenched opinions in this forum a week or two ago? I could be wrong, and sorry if I am, but I'm SURE you were the one giving off because of the way certain things were automatically agreed upon in here now, with little or no discussion, and dissenting voices being bitch-slapped down.

I.E. (a) Absolutely was brilliant (b) the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth was shit (c) Lee and Herring are funny etc.

Yes, but I prefer Bill Hicks.

That really is me away now, seeya.

That doesn't sound like the sort of thing I'd say. In any case, I'm not saying it now, so if I did say it before, now I'm disagreeing with myself, which only goes to prove my point to a degree I hadn't anticipated possible. Anyway, good luck with the programming.

Neil, I'm not trying to virtually suck your feet, or mentally twat your cockballs…

Give the CaBs site a face-lift, kill the message bored, fill it with your entire back catalogue –and some of (if not all) your opinions.

Make it funny, opinionated, informative, and truthful. //again, make it look good.

-

And if you're concerned about hackers; get hold of (ZoneAlarm' by 'zone labs) –that will block the buggers and give you piece of mind. For the time being…

An if you get bored with the comedy, get hold of ghost and goblins for 'mame' and laugh silly at your own childhood.

By the way Neil, if perhaps your didn't get the idea in my first post, I was actually standing up for you. I said that people were "unfairly giving you grief", and you turned that around to have a go at me. Secondly I think yours is a fucking good website, so where you got the idea that I was having a go at you is beyond me. I am eternally grateful for you FREE website, and am sorry for the abusive mails you get, but my thread was actually just to ask people why the site wasn't working...not an insult or comment attempting to undermine the hours I'm sure you have spent on the site.
Perhaps, you should chill, and see the compliments when they are there.
