This Is Spinal Tap Posted Thu Feb 1 17:59:11 GMT 2001 by Bel

I watched this the other night for the first time in years. Where did they all come from? It seems strange that such talented writer / performers would go straight from obscurity to cinema. It seems to pre-empt People Like Us, the Brass Eye Sutcliffe sketch, Human Remains... anyone know the history of it? Just wondering.

And, the most amazing thing for me, BACK to obscurity. I'm sure you're sick of me going on about this, but Mike McKean IS "That Guy Who Was In That Thing That Time".

I'm sure ther'll be some good linkage at www.spinaltap.com, if you want to know where they all came from etc.. it's also got some of the outtakes for those of us who haven't got a DVD player.
Not that I've actually checked it out, but here's what I (ill informedly) think they've done since.

Derek Smalls is loads of people on the Simpsons (Smithers, Burns, Flanders..)
David St Hubbins is in the Short Circuit Films, and loads of straight to video stuff.
Nigel Tufnel sits in our very own House of Lords, and married to Jamie Lee Curtis.
The Sinatra loving Chauffeur is always in Mafia Films (wasn't he the young Clemenza in Godfather II? - anybody?).
The 'Don't talk back, mime is money' head waiter is Billy Crystal.
Rob Reiner is still acting and directing, but you all know that already.
Anjelica Huston was the one who made the Stonehenge monument.
Duke Fame's bodyguard was the blok efor Head of the Class.
Sir Denis Eton Hogg is Noel Gallagher's chauffeur by the looks of things...

But what of the following? Anybody know who they are in real life, and what they've gone on to do?

Mick Shrimpton
Artie Fufkin
Bobbi Fleckman
Viv the keyboardist
Joe 'Mama' Bess
Janine

'Where d'yoo fink I came from? Bloody airplane, di'n I?!'

Artie Fufkin is Paul Schaffer (sp?), the musical director bloke on David Letterman's show.

Don't forget Airheads! METAAAL!!!

>Nigel Tufnel sits in our very own House of Lords

not any more :-)

Bruno Kirby - Godfather II, Good Morning Vietnam, and, ooh, other stuff.

>The 'Don't talk back, mime is money' head waiter is Billy Crystal.

According to the IMDb, Dana Carvey played another mime waiter, but I'll have to watch it again to work out where.

>Sir Denis Eton Hogg is Noel Gallagher's chauffeur by the looks of things...

"Mrs. Peel, we're needed."

>Bobbi Fleckman

Fran Drescher, otherwise known as the annoying one in sitcom The Nanny. Apparently, she's talented.

'I did the tweeting bird!'

RJ Parnell (Mick Shrimpton) was (is) a professional drummer. And he is actually English too. I think he rejoined Spinal Tap for some shows - billed as 'Rick Shrimpton', Mick's brother.

I have a great National Lampoon LP ('Radio Dinner') which features both Christopher Guest and Tony Hendra. Hendra's screaming Lennon parody is perfection.
