Unexpected Places Where Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia' Has Been Heard Posted Wed Jan 17 10:09:39 GMT 2001 by TJ

Backing Danny Baker talking on Radio 1.
On Jazz FM's Friday Night/Saturday Morning 'avant garde' show.
Played before the start of BBC programmes on a Sunday morning in the early 1980s.

Add to the list, someone...

Would they really be all that unexpected?

I wasn't expecting this - all night bar- Kavos - Corfu - 1990 - Slap in between 'lazyitis' and 'sally cinnamon'.

I improvised a superb air guitar solo throughout.

The most unexpected place is sadly "alternative" channel MTV2 in between The Generic Nu Metal Band and Coldplay.

>A friends car, after I had switched tapes over. It didn't last long...

I had a similar experience with Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask... and Slop by Charles Mingus, Glassblower by Download and Mickey by Toni Basil; does anybody else love that record? Would anybody like a lift in my car?

Toni Basil was in the Monkees' film 'Head'. As was Frank Zappa. It all fits.

Wasn't Toni Basil in the nip in Easy Rider?

She's dancing with Davy Jones in the song & dance number 'Daddy's Song'. She's credited as 'choreographer' too, I think.

Ha, so it is!!! It's a good sequence, too, with the quick cutting between the two versions. And not how it leads straight into the Zappa appearence!

Rhino left that track off the 4CD box set they put out a good few years back. Bastards.

Rhino's Monkees CD reissues are tops though.

The 'Head' one is my favourite - I like the version of 'Ditty Diego' where Davy Jones fucks up. But all the reissues have been put together in a really loving way, and it's a wonderful thing.

I got one of those 'Sunshine' (?) Records orange vinyl repressings a few years back - it came with a big picture of circus-boy Mickey Dolenz that I made into a mask and answer the door in sometimes. Does anyone have any other big Monkee face picture anecdotes?

Apologies - that should read 'Micky Dolenz'.

Toni Basil was a respected Noo Yawk dance artist before she covered that splendid Ace song "Mickey" (brilliantly, may I add).

And, as a Noo Yawk art mutha, naturally she did some choreography for Talking Heads, notably the Born Under Punches video where they mock up a streetfight. She might even be in it, I'll have to go and check.

And she's in Easy Rider. But you knew that.

The most unexpected place was on the Holiday programme where they were in the Czech Republic. He was very big there one time, you know. Bet no one reads this.

He was offered the job of being some sort of US/Czech cultural attache by Vaclav Havel. But Jim Baker purportedly rerouted a trip to Moscow, went to see Havel and said 'You can either do business with the US or you can do business with Zappa - what'll it be?' That was Frank's version in any case.

Has anyone read Moon Unit Zappa's book by the way? Stewart was asking about it recently.

And did anyone see Lee & Herring's interview with Moon Unit on 'Festival Of Fun' a few years back? Yes, there was a 'moon on a stick' joke.

Doesn't Moon Unit now prefer to be known by some slightly more mundane handle?

>Doesn't Moon Unit now prefer to be known by some slightly more mundane handle?

In The Mail on Sunday she said she hated her name being associated with spaceship. She does like her name according to the article. The Unit part is to do with family unit. This could be the Zappa equivalent of O' as in O'Reilley as in Of the Reilley Clan. In another interview Frank Zappa did point out that Moon as a name is used a lot around the world, some children are called Lune. Sometimes she calls herself Moon Zappa. On Hollywood Kids she said that she was considering changing her name to Beauty Heart. Incidentally has anyone read Trainspotting which quotes Zappa's Joe's Garage. Does anyone know why no mention of Zappa or his music was in the film. Iggy Pop and Lou Reed was.

P.S. The best Zappa kid name?
AHMET EMMUKHA RODAN ZAPPA

Atlantic Records genius

Zappa's Orchestra for Lumpy Gravy

Godzilla type monster

Plough

What a combination
