Levels and Audience

I was interested to see the new comment at the beginning... some good points, however I would disagree with some.
Just because comedy is not 'elitist' - as you put it, though I think 'clever' would be a better label - I wonder if this is any worse than so-called 'clever' comedies. Indeed, it is moronic, vacuous, predictable and I find quite a good proportion unwatchable.
But is it any less comedy because of this?
Surely it is appealing to an audience, and this is important.
No, I think the only solution is to appeal on different levels. And I feel you should applaud the LoG for being quirky and different, and that like many notable others it is this that makes it attractive.
Just because LoG is not straight gags, it is not bollocks. I enjoy it, and I compliment myself that I am intelligent enough to appreciate it ;)
But the real issue, I feel here, is that we should not be looking for elitist comedy but universal comedy, the stuff that appeals to ranges from Men Behaving Badly to Spaced fans (sorry, had to give the father-series a mention ;), from tv critics to adults with the sense of sophistication of a small, farting baby.
You get my meaning.
Anyway, just my humble opinion.

Oh, i think its time for my two cents!
Have you ever heard the radio show "On The Town With The League of Gentlemen"? No? Didn't think so. Imagine LoG without the reliance on gore and taboo jokes, but with well written scripts.
The TV has been paler in comparison, the first series was quite watchable, the second weaker and the christmas special was dirge. The trouble is that we know the writing team behind it can do better, and they need to be locked in a sensory depravation tank until they realise that the media will love everything they do, but thats not a reason to give up trying.

Funny you should mention "On the Town..." Qq. It dropped through my letterbox this morning, so I popped it into my walkman so I could have a listen when I was out with the dog, and it was brilliant. I was in some danger of being arrested as I strolled through the village, laughing hysterically. Certainly changed my views slightly re: the TV show.
