Louis Theroux Posted Mon Jan 1 20:17:00 GMT 2001 by 'Al'

Whilst I would agree with a great deal of the criticism levelled at the BBC (not to say C4 and ITV) on this site I would argue that Theroux's work is TV at its best. The recent series of Weird Weekends was both witty and thought provoking. I know he was on Michael Moore's TV Nation before WWeekends started - anyone familiar with anything else he has done?

His "When Louis Met Jimmy" programme (which I have worn thin from re-viewing) was casually mentioned as "the greatest piece of television of the decade" or some such superlative by the TV reviewer of one of the broadsheets recently.
I wish I could remember more specifics. I'd like to give the reviewer a kiss.

It's the way he interviews people isn't it? And the fact he'll join in with anything, even though he has this very middle-class, timid image. Class.

LT's doing one on Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee now - to be screened later in the spring.

Louis: How are you?
Jimmy: Regularly!

This is one of the funniest and most brilliant things I have ever seen.

You can read transcripts of outakes of Jimmy Saville on "Have I Got News For You" at

www.thehouse.f9.co.uk

They're rather rude and interesting.

Er, yes. Who's going to tell him, then?

Interesting, though, I'd never read 'the infamous transcripts' until now. Will we ever see them in their proper context (whatever that might be)?

To fool someone the corpses knew - possibly.
Always wondered, was it one of them who leaked it to the forum?

Right. There is a long story behind these, but although at the time it was kind of fun, in retrospect it would be incredibly tedious to relate it. Short version: SOMEONE (ahem) faked these out-takes to hoax one particular journalist; they were leaked (ahem) to the previous incarnation of this Forum, many of whose members fell for them (including me, I'm the first to admit, but then they're bloody well written) and started talking to other people about them. The magic of e-mail spread the story around the country (oh all right, London anyway) quicker than I can belch the National Anthem, and within a week the "transcripts" were being mentioned in almost every media column. They were never intended for public consumption, and could have landed the Corpses in a shitload of trouble. They're very coy on the subject these days, so none of us are entirely sure what was threatened by whom, but it all seems to have blown over without anyone actually ending up in court. Which is nice.

On the other hand, they were clearly spoofs intended to prey on widespread industry speculation about Saville's proclivities.
These particular "transcripts" may be nothing more than clever forgeries, but Mr Jimmy is a very peculiar man. I was recently speaking to someone in TV, who once organsied an event where Mr Jimmy had to be forcibly chaperoned away from the audience of underage girls.
Where there's smoke...

(PS: softly, softly, now - his lawyers watch the net like hawks.)

I'm very upset now. They are extremely well written. Well done, whoever you are.
