Elitism

Just read the elitism spiel finally, and I nod me head most vigorously. However, I don't think that the problem is that a new imaginary demographic is being catered for, but the fact that such pat demographics are actually being considered in the commissioning process. For example, take 'Boys From the Blackstuff'- it didn't appeal to a 'People's Class', nor was it purely for the educated, but it appealed to all, purely because it wasn't commissioned to appeal to any demographic. If Bleasdale pitched it today, it would either be dumbed down into prime-time soap, or filmed with unnecessary hand-held camera, just to show how 'cutting edge' it is, purely to attract a demographic. Gone are the days of something justifying its existence with quality, i.e. the very thing that made British TV superior to American TV. Ironically, there are signs of the old British way seeping into America- on watching an old episode of Frasier, there was a reference to Niles breaking a bell-jar owned by Sylvia Plath that was on his book-case. The studio audience didn't laugh, yet it was kept in.
As I write, Dave Gorman is gearing up for a BBC2 series. God help us.

He didn't have much to say on TTIAO last night, I noticed. Apart from that old joke about Ian Wright using that bloke's phone in the coffee advert despite the fact he'd already been in a mobile phone advert...
