FWIW, the note suggesting that shows like Friends and Frasier have a means of making video look like film is based on a faulty first premise. These programmes are actually shot on 35mm film, using multiple cameras, and this is then transferred to videotape for post-production.
It's now standard practice (and has been for a number of years) for all prime-time American drama and comedy to be shot on 35mm, usually multi-camera. Shows how much more money there is washing around in American telly compared to over here.
