And of an overdose of speed, too.
I'm sorry, that should have read "speedboat".
(running on 2 hours sleep, please excuse joke, i think it's a sad thing when anyone dies and Ronan should be shot, oh the duality)
It wouldn't take a long time
To explain what lies between us
And it wouldn't take a genius
To work out what the scene is
It might just take a pilot
To give you a natural high
But you're sending off those bottle tops
For your 'free piece of mind'
And are you just waving or drowning?
It's so hard to tell when you're so far away
Oh Innocence has passed you by
A long long time ago
I was the fly upon your wall
And I saw what you know
Your pornographic priestess left you for another guy
You frighten little children and you always wonder why
Always wonder why
The mercury is rising
And it's not all that surprising
In the land of milk and honey
Where you make 'big money'
And it always keeps the rain off
And it always keeps you dry
But back home the people hate you
And you never did know why
But I think I'm going to tell you
Just give me fifty thousand lire for my thoughts
Oh innocence has passed you by
A long long time ago
I was the fly upon your wall
And I saw what you know
The supermarket checkout girl
Once smacked you in the eye
When you eat no one else does
But you always wonder why
Always wonder why
It would take a gunshot
Just to clear your head a while
And after all this time
How can you stand there
Look at me and smile?
Now are you just waving or drowning?
It's so hard to tell with you so far away
Oh innocence has passed you by
A long long time ago
I was the fly upon your wall
And I saw what you know
Degeneration suits you, now I'm going home to cry
You won't be seeing me again
But you'll always wonder why
Always wonder why
('Innocence' - Kirsty MacColl)
Fucking great song, Innocence. And Free World. And My Affair. And Titanic Days. And There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. And In These Shoes? And Here Comes That Man Again.
Plus her interpretations of A New England and You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby. And not one but two great Pogues collaborations - top version of Miss Otis Regrets from Red Hot & Blue.
She'll be much missed in this flat.
In These Shoes?
Is that her... oh... she was good.
Children of the revolution coming out to play
Bombers ripped the night apart and blew the school away
Some live on the south side and they overlook the water
Some live on the north side and they're looking at the border
And those children of the revolution see the soldiers come
Smiling at the widows as they take away the sons
Children of the revolution shot down with a brand new gun
They're dropping down like flies and in their eyes
The images of war are in their eyes
They've seen it all before and know you're lies
Won't keep their bellies full
In love and war there are no rules
Children of the revolution getting off the boat
To face the ignorance and prejudice that keep this land afloat
Children of the revolution make a brand new start
Running through the rubble of a thousand broken hearts and in their eyes
All promises are broken in their eyes
The words that can't be spoken and your lies
Don't keep their bellies full
In love and war there are no rules
But in their eyes
Murder comes by sea and from the skies
It's shiny and it's quick to take their lives
And if it's cruel in love and war there are no rules
Children of the revolution coming out to play
Someone sells a gun and someone blows them all away
Children of the revolution sold out by the banks
Who swap the green upon the dollars for the green upon the tanks
Children of the revolution shot down by a brand new gun.
'Children of the Revolution' - Kirsty MacColl

>In These Shoes?
>Is that her... oh... she was good.
The bit where she just says "In these shoes? I doubt you'd survive" is hysterical.
It's available on a CD called "Tropical Rainstorm", released only about nine months ago. She's so underrated, and well worth investigating her work further, RHC. It's ironic, though, that she's been mostly remembered for stuff she didn't write. Very good compilation called Galore (Virgin, 1995) is worth checking out too.
Oh, and a comedy connection - in 1979 she wrote and recorded They Don't Know, which was later covered by Tracey Ullman in 1983.
>Oh, and a comedy connection - in 1979 she wrote and recorded They Don't Know, which was later covered by Tracey Ullman in 1983.
Don't forget she was also the special musical guest in almost every episode of Series 3 'French & Saunders'.
'They Don't Know' is such a great song.
I'm filling up.
Buy 'Titanic Days'(ZTT 1994) if you haven't already.
"Dream on she says, dream on she always says..."
>Fucking great song, Innocence. And Free World. And My Affair. And Titanic Days. And There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. And In These Shoes? And Here Comes That Man Again.
And Us Amazonians. And He Never Mentioned Love. And Wrong Again. And Eighty Year Old Millionaire.
And all the rest. There's a tribute on BBC Choice at half past midnight tonight.
It's not fucking fair is it?
'They Don't Know' is a fucking beautiful song.
I'll admit that my personal favourite moment is her backing vocals on Happy Mondays 'Hallelujah' (purely because the Mondays are among my very favourite acts of all time), but I've always had a soft spot for her music, and she will be sorely, sorely missed.
Can't say i like her music, but, you know, Jonny Marr can't be wrong can he?
And talking about backing vocals, good contribution to Welcome to the cheap seats by the wonder stuff as well.
I loved "They Don't Know" too, and her cover of 'Days' was brilliant. *sniff* I'd heard something about her upcoming R2 series and had promised to set some time aside for it, but it's been postponed now.
One less great underrated artist in this world, one more plastic clone Barbie doll will no doubt fill her boots.
I bless the light
I bless the light that shines on you
Believe me
And though you're gone
I won't forget a single day
Believe me.
Is it too much to ask that her records might sell now?
Unjustly ignored as a songwriter, and certainly the most prolific and distinctive session singer on God's own earth.
Like Billy Bragg and Stevie Nicks had a baby...
Anyone see her on TOTP2? Cracking, but Shane McGowan was barely conscious, he didn't even pretend to be singing!!
Why/what is thread title? in refernce to this?
and i said in these shoes...
that had really good music video too, remember?
>Why/what is thread title? in refernce to this?
It's a reference to the best Christmas single ever, 'The Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues & Kirsty Mac herself.
Apparantly Rowwwwnan Keating has just done a cover of it that I haven't heard but am fully prepared to find dreadful, especially as they've sanitised the lyrics so that nice young man doesn't have to sing about old sluts on junk..
I only hope people don't start buying his version as some sort of misguided tribute, that would be truly awful. Nice tributey thing on TOTP2 though, "She was a great lady to have a drink with" I'm sure anyone would be chuffed with that!
>especially as they've sanitised the lyrics so that nice young man doesn't have to sing about old sluts on junk..
"Cheap lazy faggot" would not go down well at chez Gateley I fear.
In reference to Kirsty's position as an underrated artist, I would agree that her own work is overlooked in charty circles, whereas as a session singer she is better known.
If you think that her own work is underrated right across the board then I suggest you dip a toe in the folk world. Seriously. She's very highly regarded in that field, thanks to her father. Good on 'em.
They've changed "Cheap lousy faggot" to a Mrs Doyle soundalike singing "Yer cheap and yer haggard" which makes very little sense.
I wonder if R2 will ever air her series on Cuba, it sounded very interesting, TV Times had it as their pick of the week this week.
