Jim Davidson - I can't believe it. Posted Mon Dec 11 14:15:51 GMT 2000 by 'Janet'

I had the vast misfortune to play a 2 minute piece by this individual on my radio shift. It was actually a 5 minute piece, but I pulled it after 2 minutes because it offended my senses. Unbelievable. I offer my sincere condolences to you people of the UK.
He was replaced swiftly by a piece by Arnold Brown.

He emerged in the late 1970s as a television-favoured stand up making sexist jokes about Page 3 Girls (soft porn models in national newspapers) and racist jokes about his black friend 'Chalky'. For no readily obvious reason, 'the nation' have taken him to their hearts, and he is now the much-loved host of several prime-time game shows.

Recently, he was even afforded the risible luxury of appearing on "Question Time", spouting his insidious and uninformed right wing opinions next to real politicians.

He also appeared on Room 101, where he told Paul Merton that he hates 'lefties', music made by black people, and a television presenter of whom he opined "well, he's a puff, isn't he - he's always with the birds!".

He also once starred in a sitcom called "Up The Elephant And Round The Castle", widely regarded as being one of the (if not the) most pathetic examples of the genre ever witnessed in this nation. In the closing titles of this, he sat on a model elephant next to a model castle, helpfully pointing to the items in question with a "geddit? funny, eh!" expression on his face, for the benefit of viewers who may have had difficulty interpreting the incredibly complex imagery.

He is a reprehensible human being.

Oh hell. TJ, a succinct history which makes sense in regards to what I heard.
Some crap about black bus drivers, 'Irish Paddy' and 'puffs'. Last time I take a punt on the station's playlist.
By the way, any recommendations of recorded material I may not be aware of gratefully accepted.
PS. Blue Jam album coming my way soon. Love what I've heard.

According to Teletext, on Christmas day there's going to be a stand-up act of Jim Davidson entertaining the crew on some boat somewhere, I don't care. I'm suprised they don't mutiny. And aren't jokes for sailors not suitable for Christmas Day viewing anyway? (Not that it matters. I'ld quite happily put 'The Sickest Bits of Jaaaam' on opposite the Queen's speech if I could.)

Still, to cheer us all up, BBC1 are letting us watch Leonardo DiCaprio drown afterwards, so it's not all bad.

DAVID BADDIEL: Hello, it's the Mary Whitehouse Experience here - we've been asked to entertain the troops and we were wondering what sort of thing you think they'd like.

COMMANDER (Hugh Dennis): Ah, well, now, usually they send over Jim Davidson...

BADDIEL: Yes, but we were wondering what sort of thing you think they'd *like*...

Completely agree with your assessment of scumbag Davidson, with the exception of...

>He also once starred in a sitcom called "Up >The Elephant And Round The Castle", widely regarded as being one of the (if not the) most pathetic examples of the genre ever witnessed in this nation. In the closing titles of this, he sat on a model elephant next to a model castle, helpfully pointing to the items in question with a "geddit? funny, eh!" expression on his face,

That has to be one of the funniest closing credits sequences ever! It sounds fantastic - I'm sure Jim didn't realise quite how hilarious that would be. And I'm sure you'd all be shitting yourselve laughing if it had been The Goodies doing it, hmmm?

>He is a reprehensible human being.

One of my favourite quotes was when he denounced comedy about the Royal Family: 'It's making fun of your boss, isn't it? And you can't do that - if you start making fun of your boss then you've got anarchy, haven't you?'

The biggest problem is the fact that his sense of comic timing (imho) is impeccable, and he'd probably be a really funny bloke if it wasn't for the fact that everything he says, does, all his opinions and everything he believes in and stands for stinks to high heaven...

The scariest thing I ever heard about Jim Davidson (apart from reading on this thread that he's not dead) was that he is a big fan of Pink Floyd (as am I, which makes it all the more galling) and regularly performs songs from The Wall in his live shows.

!!!

I can only imagine that the irony of lines such as
"That one looks Jewish and that one's a coon!" sails several feet over his repulsive squirrel's arse of a face.

While I'm ranting, I'll mention that I got a piece of junk mail trying to flog me a credit card the other day, with Davidson gurning at me on the front of the envelope. I really can't think of anything that would make me less inclined to a) open an envelope or b) do business with the company who sent it to me, than such a vile gargoyle emblazoned on its exterior.

I got that today! And exactly the same thoughts ran through my mind...

Davidson is apparently a big prog rock fan, and in fact Greg Lake of Emerson Lake And Palmer fame produced his recent LP. Yes, such an odious item does exist. Suffice it to say that on said disc, Davidson covers my most hated song of all time, Bob Seeger's 'We Got Tonite', which has only made me hate him all the more.

I seem to remember him saying something really stupid on a documentary on "Spitting Image" many years ago, but unfortunately I can't recall exactly what it was. Anyone?

Note the amount of prog stuff that pops up as incidental music in the Gen Game these days (not that I watch it...) and people like Carl Palmer often pop up as special guests. I think he alternates them with Jethro and Blakey...

I think that was probably on the John Lloyd A-Z of Comedy South Bank Show thing. Same line as quoted above about making jokes at the royals leading to anarchy. Maybe there's a button on his arse or something that trots out that line on request...

Ooh... hatred wells inside... ignore him though, listen to PF anyway.

Cuh. Reminds me of when Bobby Davro, now thankfully off our screens, had a moan in an interview about Ben Elton et al, and said, "I'd rather do jokes about girls with big tits than a joke about Mrs Thatcher, because you shouldn't offend when children and grannies are watching."

Incidentally, tomorrow's tabloids are apparently leading with: "JIM: I'M BACK ON THE BOOZE". No doubt he'll continue to be an asset at Conservative Party Conferences...just the sort to stand side by side with Ann Widdecombe...

In the middle of a rant about political correctness, Alexei Sayle once said "you can't call Jim Davidson crap now, you have to call him differently funnied". That, I thought, was sheer class.

Who was it that punched their fist through a portrait of him on TV once?

How come you ended up playing one of his tracks anyway?

Laugh Radio runs comedy 24 hours a day and has a programmed playlist -the regular announcers generally rely on using that. The guy who runs it has a bit too much crusty old/dodgy stuff programmed for my liking so I bring in things from my own collection (things he doesn't have) to liven it up with.
Lets see...Monday I played selections from Ardal O'Hanlon, Doug Anthony All Stars, Corky and the Juice Pigs, Radio Free Vestibule (Canadian sketch group), Judith Lucy, Proops, Coogan, Hegley, Hicks, Carlin, Tripod, Ross Higgins...that sort of thing.
I'm limited a little because my shift is in the 'swear word free' time ie before 9pm otherwise I'd be able to play some of the material I REALLY like eg. Carlin's "Golf courses for the homeless."
Used to be on a show on another station where we could play 'fuck' in drive time. It was a magazine-style comedy show - we'd play comedy, do comedy news and reviews and interview comics. Worst comic we ever had in was an American guy called Barry Diamond who'd been on Seinfeld (playing an annoying comic - typecast, in my mind). He was a right cunt.

Those of you who saw *Trust Me, I'm the Prime Minister*, the RTS Huw Weldon Memorial Lecture on BBC2 last night, would have seen a clip of Jim Davidson as (Michael Cockerell put it) *William Hague's warm-up man*.

Basically, it was a take on Tony Blair's *sweaty* conference speech.

...and no, it wasn't funny.

You damn stupid Lefties make me sick. It wasn't easy replacing Larry Greyson but I think I've done a good job. Larry, despite being a ginger beer, would have been a personal friend of mine had I been able to tolerate his filthy life. And I didn't see any of you lot supporting our boys when the bullets were flying. Some of those Greenham Common women were built like Russian shot-putters; it took five of us to beat just one up. Some of you might find hitting a woman shocking. But you all know me, I would hit a woman without a good drink inside me.

Now I'm not saying I'm the nicest bloke in the world or the most popular, but what I'm saying is this: I get loads of money off the BBC, and you don't. And that's what you don't like, ain't it? You're just jealous of a working class man making a very comfortable living from racist and sexist jokes. You'd rather have some black bloke on stage (wouldya?) making jokes about the colour of my skin. Well I can't help it if all the booze and whoring's made me grey. That's the colour I am.

Another thing some you Trotskiest don't like is me getting my picture taking with the most desirable women on the planet. No, you daft fuckers would rather have me with me arm round Jo Brand (as if that was possible!) Well mind old pal Gary Bushel's seen her career off and she won't be back.

Up Yours

Jim Davidson

1) Jim Davidson is a Freemason. As is Freddie 'Parrot Face' Davies.

2) It was Arthur Smith who punched through a picture of Jim Davidson, on Paramount City, I think.

3) In the BBC bar last year, Jim Davidson tried to start a fight with my sister's boss, accusing him of jumping the queue at the bar. Of course, my sister's boss just called him a pathetic individual and walked away. Good on him.

Ah yes. "This one's for the nanny."

(Davidson had been arrested a couple of days before and charged with assaulting his nanny.)

(The nanny of his children, I mean. I don't mean to imply that the man is frequently so incapacitated by drink that he requires a nanny of his own. Perish the thought.)
