An Independent Income Posted Sat Dec 9 09:43:03 GMT 2000 by 'Baby Coelacanth'

I'm making big assumptions here, but what follows is only a theory.

I reckon part of what made Chris Morris so daring in his early radio career (the helium-filled studios, etc) was the fact that he came from a rather wealthy home and knew he wouldn't starve if he got the sack. He could just do what he enjoyed doing without having to follow the usual brown-nosing career path that most un-rich mortals have to. Now this may be viewed as caricaturing him as a dilletante, but I think it's an important factor in his comedy apotheosis.

Incidentally, I used to work in the basement studio of a radio station in Liverpool. They kept a cannister of helium by the lift to fill up balloons. One day I decided to try and let some out in a hilarious Chris Morris stylee. When I pressed in the valve of the cannister it made the loudest bang I have ever heard. I absolutely fucking shit myself.

I think there's a lesson there for all Chris Morris wannabes.

Don't play with helium unless you're wearing rubber pants?

Good ideas, but: exactly how much was Morris supported by the wealth of his home? I've never heard anything said aobut this before, but I hesitate to say anything until I know, etc.

It's never stopped me! The first posting is just a theory. In a spirit of true scientific endeavour I have submitted the idea to 'peer review'. Feel free to prove/disprove it with actual facts, anyone.

Oh yeah. RHC, welcome back!

I have a feeling Morris actualy did work to support himself sometime. Erm.

To be honest, I don't imagine that it was that much. Anyway he'd learned to survive on little money (having been a student) and local radio doesn't pay brilliantly (I seem to remember an interview where Trevor Dann confirmed that CM got f'all money at GLR), and in any case he was already well versed in finding new platforms for himself after the old ones had been snatched away following 'bad' behaviour - this, apparrently, had been going on since his student days.

To be honest, I can't see where this 'loss of daring' that people keep talking about has come into it. Maybe with the Loaded piece, yes, but that's just one item. Everything else - including "jam" - has had the potential to throw him into severe trouble with his paymasters. In fact, come to think of it, "jam" has done...

How so, TJ? The lack of jaaaam 5? Or the stuff with the BSC? Or something else?

Incidentally, do the BSC have any real "power" like the ITC? If so, why do we need both? I know they are supposedly being consolidated into one body, but why are there both in the first place?

Also, on the SOTCAA page about jam, is the picture of the girl with man-bits at the end an actual still from jaaaaam 5, or a Corpse's impression of what the scene would have looked like had it gone out?

Yep, both of the above.

Someone mentioned this awhile ago didn't they? its not the shot that was seen in the show (which didn't feature below the skirt), so who knows where it came from?

If it's an original shot, is this a rare example of Chris's "self-censorship" that the Corpses were complaining about?

Maybe it was meant for the never-broadcast episode of "jaaaaam" that would have featured that sketch? It could be the reason that Channel 4 refused to broadcast it. Either that or it's a mock-up by the Corpses of how it might have looked.

Not self-censorship at all. The story goes that C4 wouldn't allow it in "jam". CM allowed it to be cut ont he understanding that it would go out intact in "jaaaaam". But they said no to that too, which is why the "jaaaaam" in question never appeared...

TJ, where do you get all your knowledge from?

Scanning various sources of CM information, and (a rarity among his fans) using a cunning filter to work out what is genuine and what is pants.

Ahh yes, but i heard Chris Morris is working with Jamie Oliver on his next series 'The Blue Naked Chef', where everything is cooked in near darkness, with a funny effect so everything moves a bit slower than it would in real life, and everytime someone say 'pucker' Kevin Eldon appears and pulls a shocked face.
Surely this is true?

BBC1 Tuesday
7:30 ANIMAL JAM HOSPITAL
Rolf Harris, dressed only in a thong, looks over the vet's shoulder as he asks sick animals, "Now...what seems...to be the problem...?". Mark Heap stares in through the window covered in caterpillars.

Nah, Keith Floyd's already done that. I'm looking forward to 'The Newsround Today' where John Craven makes a girl guide cry for not raising enough money on a sponsored walk.

I direct your attention to the bit titled "IT'S DEAD AND ROLF HARRIS" on http://ds.dial.pipex.com/ap2/two/two_002.html which is quite clearly insane.

Surely there are more sedentary animals than guinea-fowl that would be better suited?
