Why did they look so similar in about 1999? - the idents I mean?
They both used this "coloured squares" idea...um, why?

Those weren't idents, they were title sequences.

They were quite different really - Central did theirs with people very faintly doing things to do with producing the news (Very self-referential) and Midlands Today took the "images from round the region" approach.
Everyone in the design world rediscovered the coloured square in the late 90s so it's hardly surprising is it!

The Central news west tune in about 98 was better than the Midlands Today one, thats the one with the sort of electric guitar i think, cant remember, but the midlands today 99 wasnt bad,
