Matthew Holness Posted Fri Nov 24 02:36:18 GMT 2000 by Helen

In case anyone was wondering what the Corpses favourite ex-Cambridge Footlighter was up to at the moment, and I know you all were... I am proud to be able to inform you that he has been performing live, on the same bill as Perrier Nominated(TM) Richard Ayoade (Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight)-another former footlight president, I've discovered- as a "comedy" foreign psychic. He was, unsurprisingly enough, really not very good. There seemed to be a distinct lack of jokes, or indeed anything particularly funny in his performance. It was based around the one -unoriginal- premise that *he didn't actually possess any psychic skills at all* How we laughed...
Anyhoo, not sure if anyone really cares, but at least I now know that the Corpses disdain for him was entirely justified.
(Richard Ayoade, on the other hand, was pretty good. Did anyone see Garth Marenghi's F.N.? Opinions on it?)

Helen, well done, you've managed a display of incredible ignorance. I saw Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight in Edinburgh. It was one of my favourite shows. I had also seen it when they were trying it out at the Hen & Chickens when it was, admittedly a bit ropey. What you (and the Corpses) don't seem to realise is that things are generally improved by working on them. In particular I thought the performance of Matt Holness as the central character Garth Marenghi in Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight was superb and both he and R.A. were deserved nominees.

R.A. has been doing stand-up for a while. M.H hasn't. It's no surprise that one of them is more skilled than the other is it. But as you were unaware that they write together and that they were jointly responsible for creating GMFK it's not as if your opinion on their relative merits really adds up to much is it?

I haven't read any of your other postings to the forum. The one I have just read shows that you are stupid and ignorant and happy to remain that way. With work you might improve, but I am now going to write you off as a twat right now forever and ever. Serves you write for not knowing something once. You c*nt.

Is there something wrong with your typewriter?

Seriously though, all Helen said was that she didn't think MH was very good and RA was better. Is that worth calling someone a cunt for, just because you disagree? I think you'd feel a lot less stressed if you just cut down on the caffeine and smiled a bit more.

Matthew Holness played saxophone on Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street', you know. That's true!

To Anon (if that's your real name...). I never claimed to have intimate knowledge of the careers of either Richard Ayoade or Matthew Holness. I never saw Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight (which is why I asked if anyone had seen it), so make no apologies for not knowing that Matthew Holness was in it. I merely expressed an opinion on their acts as I saw them two weeks ago- ie. as stand-ups. Matthew Holness may well have given the best performance known to man in GM'sFK, but I can, and did, only comment on what little of his work I have seen, which did little to contradict what I have read on the Corpses site about him.
I'm sorry if my opinion offended you in some way, but I still feel that it's something I'm entitled to, and that it makes me neither ignorant nor stupid to express it. I just thought it might be of interest to some of the regular visitors to the site. I wasn't lead by the Corpses in any way; I wasn't sure who he was until after I'd seen the act, so had no preconceived ideas about what I was going to see.
As for being happy to be ignorant, nothing could be further from the truth. Apart from the fact that I would not generally consider myself to be ignorant anyway, I am always trying to find out more information about comedy; which is why I came to SOTCAA in the first place, and why I asked for peoples opinions on Garth Marenghi's...
Sorry if this has all been a bit long-winded, but I object to being personally (and inaccurately) abused for expressing an opinion. I'm not by any means a regular contributer to the forum, so it's nice to get a reaction all the same.
P.S. Thank you to Stuart O for the defence. Much apreciated.

Anon: Having re-read both your message and my own from last night, I realised I may have missed your point towards the end. I was tired, and I think I got distracted by the bit where you called me a "c*nt".
My original posting was not intended as a serious critique of either Matthew Holness or Richard Ayoade's acts, and I'm fairly sure "really not very good", and "pretty good" wouldn't be accepted as such by most people. It was merely me giving my overall impression of what i saw.
I really didn't find Matthew Holness' act that enjoyable. It was amusing in places, but on the whole I found it predictable and unoriginal, and I would have thought that even an inexperienced stand-up should be aware that what is essentially a one-joke character may not be the best basis for even a 30 minute act.
However, I have not written off Matthew Holness' entire body of work on the basis of just this act (and what I saw of Bruiser). I would be genuinely interested to see some of his other work, particularly Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight, and if I enjoyed it I would be happy to express a positive opinion on it. I didn't intend to suggest otherwise.
If you still want to write me off as stupid and ignorant "for ever and ever" that's up to you.
Anyway, I've taken up enough space for now. I just want to try and clarify a few things. Hope I've succeeded.
Helen.
