DVD Releases Posted Sat Nov 18 02:32:36 GMT 2000 by 'Someone up too late. Clearly.'

Today, I bought Blackadder II on DVD, and discovered that having an entire series of something on one shiny disc truly is a landmark in human endeavour.

If only the BBC would shove out some more of these for *good* programmes (i.e. not ones getting relentlessly repeated already, and no bloody six-episodes-across-two-discs-costing-forty-quid type shenanigans, either. Or ninety minute 'the best of's).

Like:

The High Life
HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy
Fry And Laurie
Q
Python

And so on. Perhaps I should had prefixed this post with 'Dear Anne' and sent it Points Of View instead. Hey ho.

What does everyone else think? About anything.

I think you're a lightweight. I'm still up nearly an hour after you, and am thinking of nothing else but how offensive it is that the nation of Python's birth should have to wait till next Christmas probably to get the DVD sets of TV Python that are currently available in Yoakumland.

Grrr. Now I can't sleep.

Why not just buy the American Python releases?
I think I own 1 region 2 DVD; the rest are region 1, off Amazon. A little utility called "DVD region killer" sorts all that stuff out.

Good point. I'm planning to do just that, (though someone elsewhere on this forum was refusing to buy the US releases in protest at the A&E network, though I didn't quite follow why.)
I only mentioned the Python DVDs because it seems symptomatic of the BBC's attitude to its back catalogue that another company on the other side of the world should make the Beeb's product available, while all the BBC can fob us off with is half-arsed compilations.
The DVD is surely the toy of the obsessive fan (extra material, theatrical trailer, everything in widescreen etc)? Why is the BBC compiling its DVD releases as if they were Christmas stocking fillers?

Not just the BBc, There's a rubbish DVD of Meaning of Life with NO extra features what so ever. I hope they don't pull that trick with Life of Brian & Holy Grail too.

I bet they wont include that extra footage from the compilation video (vol 3) on series 4 either.

Ho Hum

I can't believe there are no extras on the Meaning Of Life disc. Terry Jones loves to talk about his films, so a director's commentry would have been great. And he also has a private archive of MOL out-takes (I know this cos I've seen them) which he would have been glad to put on disc. If only Universal weren't so bloody lazy.

Meaning of Life is a disappointing release, but be sure to hunt for the Criterion Edition of Life of Brian (not the standard release).

It includes two separate commentaries from all the surviving Pythons, deleted scenes (in their entirety, unlike on the Paramount programme), and a brilliant half-hour BBC2 documentary from the time of release charting the making of Brian. And radio adverts from the day. And 'color' bars. Region 1 only, and it's at least $28 online (before postage), but well worth it.

Someday, all DVD's will be made this way.
