(apologies if this has been mentioned - it kinda rings a bell but I can't see a topic for it..)

The "American comedy series that was inspired by Fawlty Towers", Payne, is running on ITV on Friday nights (well, it's on in the Meridian region at any rate). 23:30 on the 10th Nov, and again on the 24th (can't see it on the 17th for some reason).

I suspect it'll be dreadful, but could be worth a look. I missed this Friday's episode as I didn't know it was on. Anyone see it?

They've been running it for ages, just imagine a really bad rip off of Fawlty Towers with all the jokes and storylines nicked and slurred into the American style. Basil Fawlty now becomes Royale Payne.. Manuel the clumsy Italian waiter now becomes Wan the clumsy Mexican Bell Boy.. etc etc and then squeeze every breath out of what made it funny and Americanise even further until it becomes Married with Children, the husband and wife just stand there exchanging supposedly sarcastic one liners in between the audiences hooting and cheering.

*sobs*

It's truly awful. I beg of you, don't watch it! I had the misfortune to watch about 7 mins of it a few years ago, and it ruined my life.

It sounds like the sort of thing I'd like to see 1 episode of, just to confirm my belief that American humour is (predominantly) dreadful.

With (in my book) very rare exceptions.

They copied the sets - everything. Even more worryingly, John Cleese was involved in it. What really annoyed me is that the husband and wife characters done detest each other like Basil and Sybil should.

I saw one episode in America in which Royal and Contance Payne had sex! Imagine Basil and Sybil doing it. Well,... they just wouldn't.
