Futurama Posted Thu Nov 2 21:40:51 GMT 2000 by 'Squidy'

Does anyone know about the Channel 4 edits? What's cut? And are the ads in the same place they where on Sky, because they seem to be in the middle of scenes?

Several jokes are ruined because of Channel 4's lack of ads, notably Leia's line last week "We need a plan. If only I had two of three minutes to think about it", presumably followed by two or three minutes of ads.

There was a similar joke in the Simpsons where in the middle of Homer's story Marge says she needs to think of products she may want to buy for a few minutes.

Does anybody really care?

Leela, not Leia. I really must stop fantasising about Carrie Fisher.

Yeah, that's what we need. More adverts in comedy shows. My arse.

Just imagine the ad, and get on with it.

I'm not saying we need more advert breaks. Just saying that shows like The Simpsons that think they're being clever by referencing their own ad breaks sometimes have jokes spoiled by selling their shows overseas to... no, I mean, shows in the UK with less ads than America are better but if American shows... umm...
How about that ads are bad, but as long as shows reference them they.... oh fuck it, I just don't care anymore. Let's change the topic of this post to something else! Any suggestions? Local programming, perhaps?

Missed the second half of tonight's episode, but the word "bastard" was supposed to appear in it twice.

Did it? DID it? Did IT?

I bet it didn't.

Was surprised that the BBC left in two "pissed off"s in the Simpsons last week...

American TV has ad breaks in different places to us (and more of them I think). Someone please correct me, but my belief is :

Opening titles of show
ad break
1st half of show
ad break
2nd half of show
start of end credits
ad break
end of end credits

Or is there another ad break in there in the middle of the show somewhere?

The above explains why opening credits on American shows tend to run on so long, and often feature differences to look out for - it keeps you watching, rather than tuning in when you expect the main part of the show to start, thus missing the first block of ads.

Sheep - i think what you said is right - also explains bit when the credits are shown at the end. Not sure if there are two adverts during a half hour show - but i can't remember, it's been a while, leave me alone...

On Futurama, Sky made the same ad mistake (if that's what it is) a channel 4, i think.
Although, who cares about Sky, really?

As far as I'm aware (from my experience downloading .rm episodes of the Simpsons), US half-hour shows are shown as three 'acts' of seven minutes, with adverts in between, followed by ads, then final credits (or in the case of Police Squad, the epilogue and credits).

And if C4's treatment of Family Guy is anything to go by, Futurama will be ripped to shreds, especially the episodes with direct references to sex. Gits.

Yes, that's sounds right to me Mark - i remember living with a family in America, and they were watching Seinfeld - did you know it was actually popular over there? Isn't that strange!

A lot of modern British sitcoms (eg, 'Rhona')put in fake music stings between scenes, to make the shows look a bit American.

Love the theme tune to this show, anyone know what is it?

It sounds to me like an altered version of "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen.

I just hate it, when you think that they are going to show a repeat and then. NO REPEAT or no STARGATE!!!
Anyway, i love Channel 4 (!)

Does anyone else hate that?

For those unaware of subtitles, (!) is used at the end of sentences delivered with a sarcastic tone of voice.

Personally, I think they should use smileys (!)

Fairly sure that C4 (once again) have been putting in some overtime in the edit suite with regards to both Family Guy and Futurama. Worse still, it seems as if some great FG gags and sequences were cut, anyway, try Family Guy Online for a full ep. list and more:

I think that between them Sky One and C4 have shown Family Guy uncut:

Sky One cut the Diff'rent Strokes molestation gag and the Louise Woodward gag.

Channel 4 cut lots of things, including every use of the word "bastard". Which is used a lot.

I don't understand why Channel 4 showed FG in the early-evening slot; they don't cut South Park for a 6pm slot, and FG is also an adult cartoon so should be treated with the same level of respect (if not more just because it is of a slightly higher standard. In my opinion. And in your opinion too, if you have any taste.)

So... DID C4 cut the "bastard"s from this week's Futurama?

If C4 could cut South Park for a 6pm slot, they would. Animated series in this country are seen as primarly for the 8-16 age group, as adults wouldn't be interested. The concept of an adult series of this type is beyond them.

This is why Simpsons, King Of The Hill (now), Family Guy, Futurama, Stressed Eric (now), and in the future, Clerks, and possibly others I've missed all occupy the early evening slot.

You speak the truth. I just thought that Channel 4 would've been more open-minded about animation... I'm sure they would have been once (KOTH originally in 10:30pm slot, for example... now new episodes are shown when cricket is rained off, ferchrissakes).

I also doubt Clerks will ever be shown on UK TV. I hope it is, but it only lasted for 2 episodes on US TV before the plug was pulled. Apparently all the episodes are to be released on DVD in the US very soon, though.

Clerks The Animated Series is due on February 20th, in fact.

Not to mention "Angel". This is now a half-hour programme making nonsense of the often brilliant stories. Not even a late night uncut repeat.

I believe there is a late night repeat scheduled for early next year. That's no excuse for still having it on in the 5:30/6:00 slot though.

Well, that about sums up C4 at the moment,(as I seem to keep repeating myself on this).

Family Guy:(Adult in nature) shown 6.00 and heavily edited.
Tour De France: (harmless cycle racing) shown very very late at night.

Channel four? Nah, Channel fourk-up more like!

And lwaving things out of the Schedules like Stargate SG1 isn't!

I have seen a couple of episodes from the second series and they were far funnier than the first, from what I've seen so far. Can't wait...I hope that by that stage Channel 4 haven't killed it's ratings by shunting it around the schedules too much.
