It Shouldn't Happen To A Chat Show Host Posted Wed Nov 1 10:23:52 GMT 2000 by Bean Is A Carrot

Was I the only one who watched this predictable series of "classic" chat you moments/bloopers?

For some reason I enjoyed it, particularly some of the chat show moments from overseas. Such as Boyzone on an Irish chat show before they were any good (actually, they never got good). And Australian presenter Molly Meldrum saying "fuck" repeatedly through nerves at having to interview Prince Charles was priceless and a great suprise.

I think Janet will agree with me however that if ITV must show you Molly Meldrum (Australian TV's darkest hour), they should also show you the Midday Show punch-up in which the president of the Retired Solider's League and an anti-Vietnam campaigner slogged it out 20 years too late on live television. Fantastic!

It was alteratively good (Dame Edna) and bad (Lorainne Kelly). That film on how to interview Neil, sorry, nele morrissy was completely boring, however.

By the way, Bean, did you watch Comedy Lab? It had a character on it who was an australian girl interested in sporting events and drinking.

Actually, did ANYONE watch Global Pillage? It was like The Day Today in style of spoofing the media style rather than the shows themselves. It was even shot in the Show Me The Money studio. Unfortunatly, it was so convincing I got bored and fell asleep. Ultra-realism.

As Paul Hardcastle pointed out, some people are still fighting the Vietnam War, years later.

And some other people still remember Paul Hardcastle, 15 years later.

I agree, the interviewer shouldn't have whimped out of asking the big question, surely that was the point of filming that interview?

I haven't seen it. However I did see Time Gentleman Please. What accent is Julia Swahla trying to do again? From what I could gather it was a bizarre bastardisation of Australian, New Zealand and South African.

The stuff on Global Pillage was real, wasn't it? The Australian was Julia Morris, who wouldn't know a subtle parody if it jumped out of Phil Pope's trousers.

And the presenter was Jon 'Documentary about the Cambridge Footlights' Oliver, who was in an egregious student review with Matt 'Garth Meringuez' Holness and Richard 'Richard Ayoade' Ayoade.

I switched over halfway through for Ruby Wax's chat show, though - worth it for Roseanne choking on a fart anecdote.

Ah yes, the punchup. Ron Casey and Normie Rowe.
And Di Fisher flapping around saying "No, no, no" in plummy tones in the background. My friend Ross was the warm-up guy. "Everyone leapt into action to pull them apart. Almost everyone, I was hiding behind the makeup girl at the time"

There are so many golden Meldrum moments - what about when he was trying to interview an obviously tripping Iggy Pop? Iggy couldn't/wouldn't sit still, and kept stuffing the mic down his pants.

I actually watched that show that day, I couldn't believe it. Since then it's gone down in Australian TV history.

That was a classic. And you're right, there are so many. It's incredible to think that Molly got a job as a TV presenter at all, let alone that he is still going!

Something worth watching?

Now I think of it, old Mollie Meldrum did get a couple of mentions on 'Neighbours'. British viewers had no idea who s/he was.

I'm also sure Janet was recently mentioned on Blue Healers during a birth scene.

Janet: here in the home country we have also got to see, over the years: A Country Practice, The Young Doctors, Home And Away,, Mother And Son, Let The Blood Run Free, and probably some other tat that I've forgotten about. Did you have walk-on roles in any of them?

It's a new accent specially developed exlusively for Sky by a team of experts, it's called "Bollocks."
