Richard Herring: Are you the culprit? Posted Fri Oct 27 15:46:40 BST 2000 by 'Radiator Head Child'

My question is:
Were you responsible for the atrocious, but quite funny, link songs on 99p, including half and half, ten out of ten and higher and lower?

No.
I think Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil wrote and performed them - though they seemed a little like our King songs. In which I managed to say wanking and fucking on live daytime TV. I am 33 and i am proud of that. I am pathetic

Accuse me of living on the moon for the past year, but what is this '99p' show, musical, or whatever that everyone keeps talking about?

Aram: comedy show from which Richard was fired. Starred Simon Pegg- walking God- Armando Unnuci(?)-nice voice
Peter Baynham -pretty fly for a white guy-
Mel and Sue- hehehehehe-
and various others which allude me.
I've got 4 or 5 episodes on tape if anyone is interested.

V. late on Radio 4.
Er, it was a quiz show that gave away a grand prize of 99p, originally was going to be called King Stupid, but it wasn't.
First ever show to use the phrase "special velvet fox plinth" ever. Ever.

To change the subject, Richard Herring: In what song did you sing wanking and fucking? I'm asking cos I'm genuinely interested in subversion of, er, Daytime telly.

It was the king of the show song from TMWRNJ. It had "king" in it you see.

Didn't Stew manage to say stuff about Johnny Rotten in one of the songs?

"One king, there's only one king. Wan-king"

"Fah-fah-fah- fah fah king. Fah king"

I take back all I have said elsewhere. That was my best every work.
I think there may have even been another one.
No wonder they didn't take us back

Don't worry Richard, now you are a successful/controversial comedy writer, the show is behind you. And you are the better looking of a pair...
(Ooh, wicked thoughts get out of my head!)

I always miss subversion. I can't believe that 'fah - king' was too subtle for me! I blame my parents. Not let me stay up to watch Brass Eye, eh, I'll show em. I'll show em all! Hah hah ha ha ha etc.

99p show was called King Stupid in it's first series, and given that it was aired at a controversial time of change on Radio 4 (The Archers got an extra episode per qeek for Christ's sake), caused a load of outraged listeners to write to Feedback (Radio 4's points of View on (insert humorous drug)) and complain that it was the worst show ever. And led to the producer straight faced and innocently denying that King Stupid was an intentional bout of swearing. To paraphrase, "It was a quiz show about stupidity, therefore the winner of the show each week could be crowned King Stupid".

It had it's moments but the 2nd series was better, as it didn't feel as awkward. The first series (to me) just felt like I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue aimed at a younger audience, with all the participants embarrasingly aware of that fact.

did not know was actually made as King Stupid, but 99p was actually very funny, although Richard Herring was fired. Still contained swearing, but was mostly erased, but they left Simon Pegg's stuff in because he's so sweet he can get away with anything.

I saw one of the shows and in it Richard Herring said "Only monkeys and cunts have beards". This was understandably cut from the broadcast show the the clever Sue Perkins managed to reference it by saying something like ".. I'm giving Richard the most points because he said a rude word which will now have been cut from transmission."

I'm just amazed this strand has managed to stay on topic for so long.
If anyone wants 99p episodes I've got some, well most of them actually.
