Carlton Press Release:

CARLTON TO HIT £1 BILLION OF AD REVENUES AND 46 PER CENT OF ITV WITH SCOTTISH CONTRACT

Carlton Sales, Carlton Television's market leading advertising sales business, announced today that it has won the airtime sales contract for the two ITV licences, Scottish Television and Grampian Television.

The two ITV licences broadcast to 4.5 million people and accounted for 6.1 per cent of ITV's net advertising revenue in 1999. Carlton will use its considerable resources, research back-up and expertise in advertising sales to handle the airtime sales for Scotland and maximise their value.

By combining the Scottish licences with Carlton's existing portfolio, covering London, the Midlands, the West Country, the West of England and Wales, Carlton will be responsible for 46 per cent of ITV's net advertising revenue. The regions we sell now include almost 31 million people, 54 per cent of all adults in the UK and 56 per cent of ABC1s.

Steve Platt, Managing Director of Carlton Sales, said:

"Adding the Scottish stations to the Carlton stable gives us a stronger sell with a wider reach. We now sell from Land's End to John O'Groats and cover the three capital cities of London, Edinburgh and Cardiff. HTV and the Scottish stations together bring another 9 million people into the Carlton sell".

SMG PLC, which owns the two licences, had ITV advertising sales of almost £120m in the year ending 31st December 1999. Carlton Sales will now be responsible for almost £1 billion of annual advertising revenue.

Alongside our ITV regions, Carlton Sales handles the airtime for 11 digital, cable and satellite channels, 2,170 cinema screens, and a growing number of websites and videocassette publishers.

What about Belfast? Is it simply not there?

I would have thought Carlton would know their geography.

No - but there was the spiel about Carlton now cover *the* three capitals in terms of Advertising. The fact is that there are 4 capitals in the UK.

I think Granada sell UTV's advertising now. It used to be UNM. The contract is up for renewal iirc so Carlton could get it.

Why? Carlton has been very aggresive in the area of ad sales - take a look at cinemas for example.

Ad sales is not a core area of GMG's business. They have a large sales team and a large area to cover already.

I dont' wish to be pedantic (yes I do) but they said "the three capitals of..." which is like saying "the three fotball teams...". It doesn't imply that there are only three football teams in the whole country.

£0.02

It depends how you say it. I got the impression that they were saying only three - but to be honest I really don't care any more, it was an outburst by me and there are much more important things to be worrying about.

It could still be bad news though, rumours suggest Carlton will want to buy Border, however the deal with Capital seems to prevent them from doing so.
However, OnD is a worrying prospect for Granada, as they are not getting what they had hoped out of it, and Carlton as partners dont make the best of mates, i.e. Carlton wanting to jump on the FTSE and Granada not.

AFAIK Capital agreed to buy Border back in the spring, with Granada having a three-year option to purchase Border's TV franchise. Border is still listed as a seperate entity on the money pages of the newspapers, which suggests that it hasn't been bought over yet.

Purchasing Border would be a logical step for Carlton as it would enable Scotland to be sold as one 'unit' for advertising purposes. However, this would then involve splitting its area so that Granada would pick up Cumbria, which would allow it to continue its advertising for the north of England, again as a unit. Throw in the fact that Granada Media, through Tyne Tees, reaches a small part of SE Scotland and the situation is even more complex.

As has been discussed previously on the forum, splitting Border would require the approval of Parliament and the regulatory bodies, and they have already said that this won't be allowed to happen under the current legislation. However, Border has recently applied to renew its licence - so anything could happen!

Granada would not, not buy Border, as it would make GranadaLAND complete, that is really what matters to Granada - LAND, and regionality of course
