The Hunt for That Good Radio Comedy People Talk About Posted Tue Oct 24 10:54:31 BST 2000 by 'boki'

OK, I'm getting reports that it was seen heading Southbound on the M1 just past Junction 5. If we can somehow divert it onto the M25, we'll have it*

(*Courtesy of boki's 10 year-old jokes dept. Special offer on Steve Wright Posse catchphrases: Buy one, get paid to take the rest away)

Seriously, though, is there anything decent on the radio or is it all a big fat myth?

I have tapes of shows broadcast between 1983-9 that were very funny, better than stuff on the TV.... but I don't listen to anything nowadays.

Probably the same problem as the stand-up circuit: the talent moves on, millions of hapless wannabes take their place.

According to those Radio 4 ads on BBC1 all Radio 4 comedy is HILARIOUS and is either bitingly satirical (ie Dead Ringers) or contains big name comedy celebs (ie Dawn French).

Radio 4 hasn't had a great deal of comedy worth listening to these last few months, in my opinion. Things Can Only Get Better was good, but not in a comedy way. The repeats of Sean Lock are worth listening to, Dead Ringers has it's moments, and as previously mentioned, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue is always looked forward to.

World of Pub from a year or two back was good.

Hello, one would think someone would have brought The Way It Is up.
It's great (not at all juv- juav- jiv- adolescent).
I love it.
Oh well it's finished now, but may be returning to television in the new year.

All the bits of The Way It Is I've heard have been terrible. Poorly-thought-out presenter sub-characters and sketch material that tries to be outrageous (e.g. the sperm bank - my how shocking). Neh.

As far as Radio 4 panel games that don't change the face of comedy but are amusing and entertaining, I enjoyed The Motion Show. Such a brilliantly simple idea too.

People who insult the Way It IS are lamer than Chris Evans.

Just the opinion of an angry "The Way It Is" loving mob gathering outside your house right now.

I'm not there, it's half term, this is my quiet time.

Ow! That hurts.

You have much to learn, Radiator Head Child, he said patronisingly.

Do I sound like an old fogey bemoaning the state of pop music? "That 'The Way It Is" - you can't hear the words - and there's no tune you can march to." Just compare TWII to On the Hour, Lionel Nimrod or even In Excess and you'll see how weeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaak it is.

Your attitude does you credit. Purchase the "On The Hour" BBC Radio Collection tape. Look at the many web sites where you can download fantastic bits of early nineties Radio 4 comedy. There used to be a great site where you could hear Radio 4's behind-the-scenes of "Knowing Me, Knowing You" show, but I can't remember the address. No matter. Pester forum users to send you tapes of stuff like "Saturday Night Fry" or "Radio Active".

Go forth my child!

List of programmes for Radiator Head Child to beg people for tapes of:

On The Hour, Fist Of Fun, The Christopher Morris Music Show, The League Against Tedium, Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World, Blue Jam, In Excess, Down Your Ear, Victor Lewis-Smith, Kenny Everett, Round The Horne, Hancock's Half Hour, The Goon Show, Radio Active, Lee And Herring, People Like Us, Derek And Clive (yes, I know it wasn't on the radio, but I had to mention it!), Why Bother, Armando Iannucci...

...anyone think of any more? We must educate the nation's youth!

I found about six episodes of Lionel Nimrod/Victor Lewis Smith/Radio Active in a box a few months ago. Best find ever.

It's probably just those rose-tinted glasses again, but I can't help feeling material like this is thinner on the ground than it used to be.

The Now show had it's moments but I'm not a big Punt & Dennis fan and I thought a lot of their material was "more of the same". I liked Simon Munnery and Al Murrays segments in the first couple of series, but even Munnery seemed to be running out of things to say towards the end of the run.

It's ok tho. Nothing to slag off really.

But don't listen to me - I'm completely mad! Woo-hoo!!

For proof one only needs to look at "Weird" Al Yankovic (?). A man so inexplicabley dull he enforces his "weirdness" with the addition of the adjective "weird" before his name.

RHC... The Now Show is back sometime in Feb (don't have the exact dates yet). In the meantime I direct you to "It's Beeen A Bad Week"... which starts on R2 at the end of Nov. Similar-ish show: still topical but weird-news-story based rather than satirical and presentery-spiely rather than sketchy. Still P&D presenting, still me writing the songs. Guest celebs each week; we had Leslie Nielsen last season which was a bit of a coup.
BTW do you live anywhere near London? Cos if you think TNS is funny when it goes out you should come to the recording some time.

Little Britain looks like turning into something both good and worth talking about.
Ashley Blaker's positive influence on TNS, mentioned elsewhere, would augur well for getting a bit more discipline from Lucas/Walliams, who have generally been much poorer on the television....and the pilot was the best thing I've heard this year...
