Jayne Macdonald's "Star for a Night" Posted Mon Oct 23 16:11:50 BST 2000 by 'Phil'

Other than that channel four programme we're not supposed to mention, could this be the worst thing on television? Discuss.

I thought it was great fun!
My flatmates watched it and I loudly stated (in my oh-so-opinionated way) that every act was "shit" before launching into great waves of abuse at the TV, which pissed them off and gave me a chuckle.

Yes. I'm easily amused.

I love the way Jayne suddenly says "and now it's my turn to sing", it's like a 70s variety show come back to haunt us?

Who won anyway? I think the band with the Oasis hair-cuts should have won because they were "ironic" to Barbara Windsor.

What confuses me is the way that the audience reel with the joys of recognition whenever she sings 'her' song, but I'm left there thinking "what on Earth is this - I've never heard it!!!"

You've reminded me, I did vote in that, as they quickly showed clips of the acts. I voted for #8, some girl singing something. She sounded nice. Did she win?

[snigger] Remember the line-up for Britain's entry in Eurovision '95? They got 10 bands to reflect the diversity of the music scene, including a shit 6th form grunge band called FFF, who were introduced with a VT segment featuring Steve Lamacq saying how great indie music was. And they came last. And they were rubbish.

'Love City Groove' won, had 1 minor top 40 hit with their entry, which didn't win.

Gina G was alright a few years later though, but she was Australian wasn't she?

Yep! And incidentally, no one in Australia except her family and friends had ever heard of her before she won Eurovision. Come to think of it, no one's heard of her since she won Eurovision.

"Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit" was one of the greatest singles of the 90s.

It would be better on the radio show...

Like Stars And Their Lives with Carol Vorderman, it's great fun trying to look at where they have to draw the line regarding copying the format of some other TV programme. In SFAN, even though it was quite clear that that trio were Supergrass (appearance and choice of material), they couldn't actually say "Tonight Jane, we're going to be Supergrass". Nice to hear someone covering Sun Hits The Sky though - maybe next week a pale, wan type will bellow "Transmission" by Joy Division, hopefully. It is otherwise a worthless programme, really.

She didn't win. Let's not elevate her sad little career any further. (Wasn't she covered in chocolate on the album sleeve?)

Does anyone else have occasional moments where they aren't sure whether Macdonald is the host or a contestant?

Just like, whenever Jeremy Spake is speaking to camera, you expect the shot to cut back to the interviewer...

These are not professional celebrities, they are guests! Do not trust them with a fully fledged programme!

Now back to Gina G.
