The Great IP Witch-Hunt

OK, I'm getting a bit dismayed by the amount of mudslinging that's been going on here recently over the supposed identification of users' IP addresses. It's much easier than you think to end up with the exact same IP address as someone else, particularly if you're using something like AOL, BTClick or Freeserve (this is a professional opinion, and not just uninformed guesswork). To test this out, I had a look back at the IP addresses displayed on several random threads and found, among other things, Ewar Woowar arguing with herself, nine different potential identities for the Clown, Sheep being blamed for something that he claimed not to have written, and me offering myself the chance to own some rare La's material. I doubt that in any of these cases it was actually the same person doing both postings. And I can confirm that it definitely wasn't in the latter case.
IP addresses are hardly DNA testing - they're as flimsy as evidence of guilt as any method favoured by the tabloid newspapers, so let's all put a stop to this IP fingerpointing before people start falling out with each other for no reason.
PS I won't be adding any further postings to this thread, so you'll be able to root out any troublecausers straight away.

A very good point, TJ, I'm glad you cleared that up. But I wouldn't use me arguing with myself as an example! Just yesterday I had a very heated debate with myself over whether or not "Oblivious" by Aztec Camera was the most perfect Pop song ever written...
