TV memory versus TV reality Posted Tue Oct 17 10:02:03 BST 2000 by 'RB'

You thought Tiswas was good. But then you saw the video and realised that, actually, it wasn't.

You were bought the Henry's Cat video and can't for the life of you remember why you loved it so much.

You still say "That wasn't very ironic, was it Ironic Monty?" to yourself at appropriate moments after all these years, but then actually watch Alfresco for real again.

Have I grown world-weary and cynical, or have I just got some taste?

Other examples, please . . .

I still love Henry's Cat, apart from when he blew up my video.

I thought Tiswas was still great when I watched it back years later on video. And Henry's Cat is still good.

I still watch in amazement at all the old shows being repeated, as I've only seen most of them in black & white before. We didn't get a colour TV until about 1985 because my dad insisted that they "weren't realistic"! Therefore, series like "I Love The 1970s" are quite an eye-opener.

When I was a wee lassie I used to think that every episode of The Goodies was hilarious. Watching repeats/cable I've learned the truth. A lot were funny, but there were some real duds.
It's okay though, the episodes you remeber as being gold WERE gold.

I think The Goodies didn't start to get really good until the 1975 series. There were some classics before the 1975 series (Radio Goodies for example), but overall they weren't great. I'm a mid to late period Goodies fan.

Oddly enough, I prefer early Goodies to that which came later. A few notable exceptions aside, the later episodes lacked the bite and anger that underpinned many of the earlier choices of subject matter.
