Celebration Of Mediocrity : Ned's Atomic Dustbin Posted Mon Oct 16 14:55:30 BST 2000 by 'Jon'

Opal Music online contains this tragic statement:

NEDS ATOMIC DUSTBIN Intact-The Singles -- (UK 17 track CD album compilation inc Happy & Kill Your T ... 5.95

Yes, that's less than £6 for all of their work that record companies deemed good enough to release in the hope of a Top 40 hit.

Was the price awarded in celebration of their mediocrity?

BTW they were on TOTP once, so they are a fitting topic for a TV Forum.

I've got "Kill your Television" 12 inch.

Sorry.

Destroy it.

I had a cassette copy of 'God Fodder', which I bought for about £10 in 1992. When I sold it second hand in 1998 (along with a load of WonderStuff, Jesus Jones and Carter USM albums, also on cassette) they all got about 50p each. And that's not allowing for inflation.

I still admire Neil Kulkarni's trashing of their 3rd album in Melody Maker.

How did he trash it?

I bought "Hup" by "The Wonderstuff" when it came out, then sold it (like you, for about 50p), then bought it again whilst drunk (about a year later) and left it in a taxi.

I also used to like Carter USM. Yuk!
I saw them in Dublin, and there was this really orderly queue to stagedive. People went up one side of the stage, a guy (maybe a roadie) helped them up, then another guy pushed them off. Being someone who liked very much the naughtiness of stage diving (evading the bouncers, trying not to get hurt etc.) I was appalled. It went against the point totally if you were allowed (and assisted).

I never bought an EMF record. Or a PWEI one. So I can still look myself in the eye. With the use of a mirror.

Ah yes. I had a friend at college who finally dragged himself reluctantly into the CD age in the mid-90s. As part of his conversion to digital, he elected to sell his vast collection of 80s/90s indie tapes - a floppy-fringed, guitar-thrashing nest egg - thinking it would solve his financial difficulties at a stroke. I think he barely raised enough for two rounds in the Union bar. I remember him being particularly indignant over the apparent worthlessness of New FADs and Kitchens of Distinction albums ("but these are *rare*").

Depends how many mates he had though, doesn't it?

Ewar, what you should look for is someone more discerning, who despises NAD and the Senseless Things but likes Momus, Stereolab, Wire, The Fall, stuff like that, and would make a lovely tape of them for you.

That is the route to happiness.

Bugger, you're right. That was the night he bought a bottle of Dom Perignon '82 for every NUS-cardholder. It was the solid gold Jane From Occupied Europe limited-edition double-pack that swung it.

Hmm. I'm certainly going to make sure that my next mistake has a healthy disdain for The Birmingham Sound.

Oh, and a big fat cock, too. Only joking!! (or am I?)

The Wonder Stuff:
'Eight Legged Groove Machine', 'Hup' and 'Never Loved Elvis' are all great, great albums. Really.

Ned's did some good singles. 'Kill Your Television' was pretty good. The album is indeed, mediocre.

The Poppies were ace!!! If you are in any doubt listen to 'Not Now James We're Busy' off 'This is the Day, This is the Hour'. Also 'Bulletproof' and 'Karmadrome' off 'The Looks or The Lifestyle'

And I met Carter USM once. They were really nice. The first album is top. (esp. '24 Minutes to Tulse Hill)

EMF's second album, "Stigma", was fantastic.

I know you don't believe me, but it's true. Very nasty and industrial-sounding...

Good job no one bought it then.

EMF were a hell of a lot better than their reputation suggests, especially the later stuff - even Shubert Dip, forgetting the awful title and original bits of Mark Chapman dialogue, had many good moments...

The Stuff's Eight Legged and Hup are also grate, Never Loved Elvis was a bit naff...

If you really want bad, how about Scorpio Rising, Power of Dreams, Paris Angels, Goodnight Said Florence, First Offence...

The Paris Angels had one fantastic single - 'Perfume'. Admittedly the rest was wishy washy mediocrity, though...

Hear hear, TJ. Actually, I'd nominate 'Perfume' as one of the best singles of the 80s/90s. And I bought 'They're Here', the first single off 'Stigmata' and you're absolutely right - it rocks!

Ned's were not mediocre. They were great. Well, 'God Fodder' and 'Bite' and the Trust single were. 'Are You Normal' had its moments, but 'Brainbloodvolume' had only one good song (Your Only Joke).

So there.

The only Neds I ever bought was CD2 of the single 'All I Ask Of Myself s hat I Hold Together' and that's worth grabing if you see it in some 2nd hand emporium as it's got a very tasty Black Dog remix and a couple of none-too-shabby Beaumont Hannant efforts.

I agree with TJ about EMF's second album, too. It's a very decent pop rock album as I remember. Must remember how to use those old strips of rusty plastic again, what did we call 'em now...turps?
