HTV General Service Posted Thu Oct 12 14:22:14 BST 2000 by 'RB'

Remember when the HTV General Service was in the listings and you had to go to the bottom of the column for variations for both Wales and West?

I think this was the service provided on VHF (405 lines) that was meant to be seen in south Wales and the west of England. That transmitter was the reason for the strange marriage of Wales with the west.

What were the variations?
I assume that it showed the west's regional programme while Y Dydd was on Wales, and Report Wales at 6.15pm.

Which idents did it use?

I remember that up to the early 80s the Sunday Times TV listings had a section for 'HTV General Service and HTV West' and another column for 'HTV Cyrmu/Wales'.

I think that the two areas were brought together as in VHF days the trasnmitters had a far greater footprint. Non-Welsh speakers in South Wales could turn receiving arials towards another HTV mast and still help contribute to advertising revenue thus ensuring that an adequate amount of cash flowed into the station.

I believe the General Service transmitted West programmes apart from replacing part of Report West with Report Wales.
