If Children's TV had been a bit more careful in 1985, we'd be watching better *adult* TV now Posted Tue Oct 10 22:35:24 BST 2000 by Justin

Well, we *would* be. Think about it - adult telly is full of careerist bastards who all got into children's TV with the expressions of people who appeared to care about their audience - and then at the first sign of financial success, buggered off to torture adult audiences too. Noel Edmonds, Anthea Turner, John Leslie, Ball & Theakston, Chris Evans & Gaby Roslin (sorry, but The Big Breakfast does *indeed* fucking count before anyone says a word - who makes up most of its audience for Christ's sake?), Kate Thornton, The fact is, most children's TV presenters are painfully limited in their interests and level of knowledge. And what about those who stay with kids telly through thick and thin - Tony Hart? "Ahhhhaaahhaahaaa - what a loser, eh?" No, fucking wrong! He actually had, and has insight, talent, subtlety. And what about Johnny Ball, or Brian Cant, or Oliver Postgate, or Eric Thompson? It's not to say they *never* did anything for adult audiences, but what they never did was do so while despising all ages of their audience.

I suddenly realised while I was watching about 45 seconds of the Priory that this is why TV is so appalling. It's full of people who can't do anything except shout nothing.

Phillip Schofield, there's another one. Gail Porter, another. Where is this going to end? Can we do *anything*????!!!!!!

Justin, are you aware of a website called SatKids? It's to do with children's TV, and I've helped to initialise a poll there for the greatest children's TV presenter of all time. Given your comments in the above post, it'd be right up your street.

If Brian Cant had any insight or subtlety, he'd have changed his unfortunate name.

Yes. To Dave Cant.

Are the names on the end of Ads Infinitum jokes? It's just I'm normally pissed by 9.50, but there is a Mike Hunt.

My one hope is that Aleks Bit will make the transition to the mainstream and be as ubiquitous as Carol Changing Rooms and as skimpily dressed as Judy This Morning.
Mmmmm.

I've long railed at anyone unfortunate enough to get in the way about the fact that while twenty-odd years ago Blue Peter presenters were like your favourite uncle, now they're all like your brattish idiot cousins you dreaded having to go and stay with. Who the hell's going to be presenting kids' TV in another ten years' time? Under 5's?

Hopefully there won't be any need for presenters anymore, as you'll be able to plug your brats straight into the Dreamcast Soundquake system or summit, and leave them to hours of fun in virtual catatonia.

Can't wait.

Yeah! It'll be like The Chart Show used to be, when it was all done by computer, before they brought in Ant & Dec and they needed hundreds of people working on it.
