Carlton Central region clarified- my region! Posted Tue Oct 10 16:17:03 BST 2000 by 'Paul'

My ITV region is CARLTON CENTRAL. I live in Coventry. There are three 'sub-regions'- east (Nottingham), west (Birmingham) and south (Abingdon).

The main Central News at Six presenters for each 'sub-region' region-

West region- BOB WARMAN and JOANNE MALIN.
East region- DOMINIC HEALE and LLEWELA BAILEY
South region- WESLEY SMITH and ANNE DAWSON

The west region (the biggest) serves- news wise- Wrexham and East Wales, Shropshire, Crewe and South Cheshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Birmingham and Black Country, Coventry and Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and West Northamptonshire. (Four of those counties are overlaps).

East region serves- news wise- Nottinghamshire, South Lincolnshire, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, North Warwickshire, Coventry and Leicestershire.

South region (the smallest) serves- news wise- Herefordshire, South East Wales, Gloucestershire, Swindon, Oxfordshire, South Northamptonshire and West Buckinghamshire.

Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire (the most central counties) are all covered by Central News West and Central News East.

I live in south Coventry where Central East is popular. Coventry is a mixture of Carlton 'sub-regions'. I even read a piece in the local newspaper (Evening Telegraph) a few months ago. The figures were something like:

Coventry-

Central West- 65%

Central South- 0%

Central East- 35%

Carlton Central West is transmitted through transmitters in Lichfield (Staffs), Sutton Coldfield (B'ham), The Wrekin (Shrops) and several smaller ones throughout the west.
Carlton Central East is transmitted through transmitters in Waltham (Leics), Nottingham and smaller ones.
Carlton Central South is found through Ridge Hill (Heref'd), Oxford and smaller ones too.

In Coventry and North Warwickshire homes that see Central East receive it through Waltham, and people in the west side (side nearest Birmingham) of the city and the city centre receive usually through Sutton Coldfield.

The best region to be in is definatley the east (Nottingham) region, based in the East Midlands. The main evening programme presented by Dominic and Llewela (who also works for Birmingam's edition sometimes) is great. The reporters are excellent and show is really worth seeing.

One last 'myth': Lots of people presume this Central region's sub regions are for the West Midlands (which governmentally is Shrops, Staffs, Hereford and Worcester, Warks and West Midlands- Birmingham) and East Midlands (Notts, Lincs, Derbys, Northants, Leics). WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! read the explanations above!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as BBC in the Midlands goes....(which, i must say, isn't far at all)

Coventry is only mentioned very rarely on
BBC Birmingham's MIDLANDS TODAY. This means that we are now in a BBC news region with Gloucester and Hereford, Shrewsbury and Stoke etc.
EAST MIDLANDS TODAY's region (according to BBC Nottingham) stops at Nuneaton in Warwickshire. Strange set up as lots of people in Coventry see EAST MIDLANDS TODAY. That's the BBC for you, though...

Hope i've cleared up a few things!

(My brother works at Carlton in Nottingham)

Should any Carlton region or Granada cover Wales? I know they do, but should they? I see that North Wales is highlighted on the Granada weather map. Does Central News or Granada Tonight covery Welsh stories? Shouldn't Wales be the preserve of HTV Wales?

Granada News often covers North Welsh news. They regard Wrexham and most of NE Wales especially as Granadaland.
Indeed, a few years ago, continuity had a short spell of saying good morning and Nos Da in English and Welsh.

Its a bit ironic then, that HTV is the region they *don't* want to own out of UNM.

Is Dominic Heale the same one who used to present "TSW TODAY". I think he is.
Also i think that the central region should be reorganised. With:
CENTRAL NEWS WEST: ridge hill, the wrekin
CENTRAL NEWS EAST: waltham
CENTRAL NEWS SOUTH: oxford
CENTRAL NEWS CENTRAL: sutton colfield
(sorry about spelling)
And bring back the gallery on central news south. PLLLLEEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
