How to get a contributor's IP address Posted Sat Oct 7 15:30:49 BST 2000 by 'name schmame, we're all numbers'

There's probably an easier way but.....

Save the Forum and open it as text file.....

Don't you think it's better not to know. Why should our source matter anyway? Prejudices start with this sort of probing.

Firstly, whats an IP number? Secondly, what is it used for? And thirdly, why would anyone want someone's IP number?

On second thoughts, don't answer that. I rather know about TV idents (no offence, guys).

Basically an IP address tells peepal who & where you are.

An example, Kinder Surprise's IP translates to inh1ts23-qfe0.ims.bt.net which tells us that (s)he comes from the UK and uses BT.net as ISP.

Try it yerself!

I don't think I like being subjected to this. Why must I be recognised as part of a network? I am an island and I dislike such demeaning tags as 'bt user'.

Blimey, the forum's not used dialup addies for along time, now we're using i.p. numbers.

Right click. View source. You'll get something like this:

<meta http-equiv="PRAGMA" contents="NO-CACHE">
<TITLE>THE TV FORUM</TITLE></HEAD>
<body bgcolor="#000000" text="#FFFFFF" link="#EEEE00" vlink="#888800" alink="#880000">

The "Posted By <!-- 62.7.71.189 -->'kinder surprise'" line? that bit in the tags is the i.p. addy, which you can use to calculate how old the user is.

Yep.

Incidentally Rob, i think it's time you started using stylesheets.

Heh heh. That's right. I guess 205.188.160.121 would mean they're about 5... :)

It's right about breaking the forum as well subbes, I've seen a few threads which have been turned into one huge hypertext (c 1976 Prestel) link because of that. D'oh!

Um, i broke it hugely.

i think we need to kill this topic now beause otherwise it'll go insane.

Incidentally, my ip# starts with 33. I think they're talking about my IQ.
