ITV 1989 logos Posted Thu Oct 5 16:46:00 BST 2000 by 'johnny Banana (I have returned)'

Look I know this is an old topic from before but seeing as they all got deleated I never found out my answers so here's those questions again.

1) Does anybody have the Thames re-edit at all?
2) Did Granada & Channel use thiers?
3) Did any body who worked at TSW, TVS, Anglia or Ulster have a copy of theirs?

P.s. Someone before did mention something about Granandas

There is a website which has stills of the end-shots of all of these which you've probably seen. I don't know who would have movies of them though. I wonder did the disenters this time (UTV, Scottish and Grampian) have generic versions of the 1999 ident made for them?

According to one of the chaps that runs that site, the images came from an ITV internal manual. Whther they got as far as making idents for some companies, I don't know...

Meanwhile, ITV claimed that the 1999 idents were prepared for all regions. Furthermore, they were apparently made in '98, so there may be Carlton, Central and Westcountry versions as well as UTV et.al.

Granada ran the corporate logo only a few times in the autumn of 1989. But in the V space was the national blue upside-down triangle with three lines cut out (is there a shorter way of describing it?) rather than some bastardised spikey G.

You might want to try the Meldrum Home Page for stuff like idents and other Continuity gubbins . If they don't have it they can probably point you in the right direction...

TVS never used theirs. When the ITV generic logo was introduced elsewhere TVS jazzed up their logo and dropped the word 'South' from the pre-programme ident, leaving the rather strange name of TVS Television. However, the font accompanying the generic log was adopted by TVS for the coming next slides. There are examples all over the web.

Well the 1989 ITV logos were far better than the current crop out now. I always associate the classic jingle with ITV even now

Whereas if you come from a region that didn't use their ident that jingle is simply 'the weather music'!

Thats right they used it on the national weather for some time. Did Ulster ever use their version? I`m not sure they did.

No, Ulster had just started using their first ever computer generated ident a few months before. The ITV business was only seen in NI during the national weather.

At that time, they weren't too worried about ITV branding showing through - they just didn't use any of it locally, apart from Telethon.

Interestingly, UTV used to delay the weather forecast after News at Ten to halfway through the ad break instead of taking it live, straight after the news. And they would often say (just after NAT) something like 'At 10.40 the Kelly Show, but next, the ITV National Weather'

I heard TVS did occaionally. The big problem with TVS's is that the designers apparently only had access to the end of the then current ident, which only had the TVS lettering in it, not the sea-shell device which starts it they should have used that instead of basing it on the 'S'.

Ulster's wasn't particularly good, either. Ironically, the one which I think was the best, Anglia's, wasn't used.

Nope. They never used it. They just tarted up the normal logo...see my comments above.

I liked the Border variant by the way. They used it at the end of local shows too for a while.

I always thought it looked as though it was upside down.

That's why I liked it. They obviously couldn't fit it on, so they adapted it in a rather clever way.

There was an argument (on MHP-chat, I think) a few years ago about this. Someone said he'd seen it on-air.

They used it first for Border News which seem stupid to me, but I didn't see it used as intended until Border's Birthday celebrations (30th?)

Weren't they just the standard logos on a wibbly blue background?
Then the logos went all wibbly and disappeared as Big Ben, that ballet dancer etc formed and the letters I, T and V formed?

Generally yes, however, Tyne Tees appears to have had a 'wibbly' yellowish background.
