At Last The 1948 Show Posted Sat Sep 30 17:28:54 BST 2000 by 'TJ'

Not wishing to promote The Telegraph any more than is necessary, but in the 'arts and books' section of today's issue, there's a fascinating article on the recovery of material from the missing episodes of "At Last The 1948 Show".

And I'm going to the NFT thing tomorrow! Has anyone any suggestions for questions I could ask, on behalf of the Forum? Apart from when in the name of buggery will we ever see Goodies re-runs, of course.

I'm going to that too. I'm also going to the later "Guardian Interview with Eric Sykes", an event not to be missed I feel... I miss seeing my name in red...

yes, I'll be sticking around for Eric as well! I'll probably be in the bar in between, I'll be the short dark-haired one with the big nose.

The Eric Sykes interview was one of the best things I've seen in years - you can tell how highly he's thought of to have Michael Parkinson turn up at the NFT to host. Two fab quips:

Eric: Do you know, in Finland there are 187,000 lakes?
Michael: Who'd have thought?
Eric: If this was Sweden, there'd have been a round of applause by now...

Michael: It is fascinating, the route you've taken from Oldham to where you're at now. That's why all these people are here this evening, to see you.
Eric: Well, it was a toss up between me and The Wheel...

Sorry to everyone in the bar I couldn't have stuck around longer...

'1948' was good yesterday. There were hints from the compere that a video release is under consideration, although he may have just been sycophantic to TBT.

The Q&A was a waste of time really. One bloke was describing himself and others as a "geek comedy fan". Self-deprication is a dangerous thing.

err...that was me, I'm afraid! I honestly didn't mean to libel anyone else. It's just that, as anyone who has the misfortune to be one of my friends can tell you, if I'm not an obsessed geek, who is?

It was really charming that Eric got a standing ovation. I've never seen that at any of the NFT interviews I've been to. He handled the question about Penis Puppetry well, too. Apparently he's doing a film - or picture as he called it - in Spain with Nicole Kidman, shame he's otherwise still relegated to panto and touring in Charley's Aunt. Regarding Parky hosting - well, he is a fellow of the BFI, and wrote a book on Westerns for them in the mid-70's.

Oh I don't know... Self deprecation can be quite endearing... Win the gits over, let them think you're weak, then go in for the kill!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, better take some valerian root now...

I saw a very good interview with Rod Steiger at the NFT about eight years ago. He was quite fascinating... I must say, I'd never formed a very good impression of Tim Brooke Taylor, from hearing him on radio etc. and Sunday's "live" experience didn't improve it - he always seems so up himself, so smug.... still, I could be very wrong.

The other thing that occurs to me is - why didn't anyone ask Aimi MacDonald about her experiences in Rentaghost? I'm sure she was in it briefly during the 80's....

She was - as Susie Starlight in the last couple of seasons. She kept applause in a handbag or something.

I think Tim's being jokey-smug myself.

Didn't you all love the way that the lovely Aimi Macdonald talked and acted in that stupid/dumb way she did in the show in real life?

I could have asked about her soft-porn films in the 70's of course, but I'm too much of a gent. Interesting that TBT referred to "this rather grand manner" that Cleese has, of claiming he's moved on from stuff and doesn't want to be associated with previous projects...if only he could have the same attitude to doing commercials. And crap film cameos..I find it truly sad that, on recent form, Johnny da Cheese seems to be less keen on working for Terry Gilliam (a true cinematic visionary IMHO, even though I haven't been too crazy about his recent stuff) than for Michael bloody Winner.

Maybe Gilliam doesn't spend enough time in Barbados......
