So... News at Ten on ITV is back.... Posted Thu Sep 21 17:27:29 BST 2000 by Jase

Head to head with the BBC News At Ten. Restricting terrestrial viewers' choice of when they watch the news even further. A welcome climbdown, or even worse than the 11 o'clock programme?

A pointles change. Who gives a toss when the news is on ITV anyway - whether its an hour earlier than it is now or not, doesn't make much difference.(a generalisation follows) People only pretend to care so it appears they are intereasted in whats going on in the world - they feel like they have to appear intereasted, bcause news programs are so culturally 'important' (even though you can watch it on the BBC at 9 [or 10, or whatever fucking time it will be on])
Send Kirsty young back to 5 and remove all news from itv. Then we can have more touch of frost, and programs presented by DJ Steve Penk, whoever he is.

I think it is good that ITV is moving N@10 - The two main news programmes will now go head to head and the Nightly News will be *forced* to rais itself from the awful "What Would the Daily mail do?" editorial policy and put out a real news show.

One worry about all this is the prospect of a news ratings war. Does this mean that we will have to endure further dumbing-down and duck pond stories in order to get the punters to watch?

News and documentaries should and must be about impartial facts. Ratings must not be the end-all of broadcasting policy - espically not at the BBC which is meant to be public service broadcaster.

Still with the march of digital media, I'm guessing as to how long it will be before they decide to remove news bulletins as the number of households who receive news channels (Free 2 air, or subscription) increases.

I agree with your sentiments PJ, ITV is generally poor - but that is only to expected as they rely on viewers and advertising revenue to make their money to make the shows.......in a sort of perpetual cycle - But the loser is definetely the viewer. That's why the near imminent prospect of a news rating war is very bad news.

FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!

THEY ARE NOT BRINGING BACK NEWS AT TEN!!!!!!

They are simply moving the Nightly News from 11 to 10.

Yes the show may well be presented by Trev. but to be honest...does it matter? - The thing will only last for 15-20 mins and the format will not be changing that much, dont get too excited about this, NAT is NOT returning.

They said it will feature bongs, but erm...so does radio 4 and that is shite - anlso the nightly news does have some bongs.

So it is going to be presented by Trev then?

Right, so obviously good editorial judgement is not as important as finding the right dummy to read from the autocue.

What happened to Thatcher's regulation with a light touch. Sounds like regulation with a heavy writ. There's news at 6, 6.30, 7, 9, 10.30 not to mention Sky, News 24 and round the clock ITN....don't politicians have enough air-time. It's their moaning that caused all this.
