You want a controversial thread do you? Alrighty then... Posted Thu Sep 21 12:07:53 BST 2000 by The Devil's Advocate

Dr Who was in fact a load of crap. Because the sets were shit, it was overacted, the plots are actually quite boring and the only reason people like it today is because a) it's a nostalgia trip and b) it's got "brilliant" bits where you can see the companions struggling to keep their hot pants from spliting in two.

Battlestar Galactica was far superior to Doctor Who. And Star Wars. So there.

But on this forum it may possibly be dynamite!

Cold light of day arguments - Battlestar Galactica is terrible. It may look more impressive than Dr Who, but it is unimaginative and cliched.

I don't see how you can compare Star Wars with Dr Who - one is a Hollywood feature film and the other a low budget (relatively) BBC show.

As far as the quality of Dr Who goes I would concede it's highly variable, but as far as hotpant splitting moments go there are precious few. On the whole I think the stories are imaginative, and sometimes the visuals achieve a great deal with very little. Overacting is not really the point - we're not dealing with a 'realist' series like The Cops here.

Surely everyone here is too sensible to rise to such ridiculous bait. Intelligent arguements against such a point are needed/have bneen supplied by Al.
Anyway, more comtroversial things please. It makes things much more intereasting.

Silly me. Telefantasy has to be realistic. My life is obviously a sham and my pants have just split.

'Battlestar Galactica' was absolutely terrible, but only on a scale where 'Galactica 1980' marks the very depths of bad television.

Hey ho. This might end up as another long-running Who thread. Come on Simon, Al, george, John!, Jon and everyone else - let's squat!

And your definition of 'controversial' is silly-named galaxies apart from my own.

Why not say something genuinely shocking - I don't know, Richard Gervais is better than Tony Hancock?

Sorry, can't be arsed with this thread. I've never ever held up Dr Who as quality TV, but some of it's very good indeed, and I just like the escapism of it. This really is a futile discussion - much like the Dr Who thread obviously - but less fun.

Furthermore, no, I don't want a controversial thread. I don't like controversy, I hate it, it's futile... Much rather go on a long bender in good company...

>Hello? IRONY ALERT!!!

How about this for a controversial statement? "Irony" is overrated and also shit, when used badly, by people with no imagination or soul.

Those working on The 11oClock Show would doubtless describe their handiwork as "an ironic take on the day's news". It isn't - the over-the-top homophobia, racism and nurse-hatred is not what would happen on the real news. On The Hour/The Day Today was rather more subtle and clever (times about a billion, then) about the double standards of news presentation.

But then we are dealing with The 11OClock Show, a programme with no redeeming features whatsoever. No irony there. I mean it.

...and lest not forget that The Day Today was slick in presentation and didn't have any difficulty in hitting its targets, (just compare the straight-faced approach of Morris to the smug mugging by Lee), whereas the 11oCS is a mess sandwiched between commercials, and is woefully lacking in any jokes and humour. It doens't even have a sense to know what it is attacking - so it even fails to be satirical or topical.

"[A]s far as hotpant splitting moments go there are precious few."

And you've relentlessly tracked them all down, eh Al?

Funny you should cite The Cops as realism. I saw this the other day and it struck me that the script was just as stilted as Casualty, it was the camerawork that gave it whatever edge it had (cf. This Life).

DW was completely brilliant, except towards the end, when it fell into the hands of men who didn't care for it and had no respect for the ever-evolving tapestry it weaved. So ner.

Not as such, but Chris Howarth and Steve Lyons 'Cpmpletely Useless Encyclopaedia' does a good job of cataloguing the few moments of underwear revelation in Who.

>Funny you should cite The Cops as realism. I saw this the other day and it struck me that the script was just as stilted as Casualty, it was the camerawork that gave it whatever edge it had (cf. This Life).

I guess I meant 'realism' as a style of film/TV/fiction, rather than something which actually recreates real life.

Yes - but don't I recall you saying you enjoyed some of the McCoy stories?

BTW - Welcome back! The place wasn't the same without you. Ner ner to you too!
