Basil Brush Posted Wed Sep 20 22:27:44 BST 2000 by Dan F

Today's Times has an interview with foxy Basil Brush. Apparently he'll be starring in a new sitcom where he is befriended by an American family who have moved to Wimbledon. So what's the verdict on his career so far, comic genius of our time or manky old glove puppet? Boom! Boom!

This runs the risk of looking cute, but I enjoyed it as a kid. I kind of liked the way BB's voice used to fluctuate between erudite quintessential English, and a Cockney rasp - possibly not unlike Kenneth Williams.

The last time I saw BB (on fantasy Football League) it seemed the guy who did his voice was either pissed or going slowly doolally.

He always reminds me of a Leslie Phillips sort of character. Very saucy and tongue in cheek. I wonder if there's a 'Basil-Uncut' tape floating around, in the hands of some VT editors.

I think he was based on Terry-Thomas - look at a picture of them both and note the similarities in the teeth and the style of dress. Boom! Boom!

Who's the twit? I am! For some reason, I'd never made the connection before! I somehow like BB even more now...

Let's not forget the genius behind the furry spectacle... who was... Ivan Owen.
