*They* were the people who sparked most of the controversial comments due to the personal and opinionated articles and features that they wrote.
In their absence (which has not been explained) it is natural (because the main focal point has gone) that smaller and 'less significant' threads will become more significant to the 'regulars' who want to make sure that they keep up levels of interaction.
