Paula Yates Posted Sun Sep 17 16:37:29 BST 2000 by Dan F

I've just read on the BBC News site that Paula Yates has been found dead.

Admittedly The Tube looks dated now, but at the time we loved it...and her too. We all thought she was strong and fiesty. Now the tumbleweed blows through Studio 5 at Tyne Tees...and it's a sad end to a tragic life.

Any news on how she died? It's a pity she lost it once that bearded, unclean rocker came on the scene.

No news yet...only that there are no signs of violence. Expect clips of the Tube on the news tonight.

ITN are leading on it right now. They are saying she ahs been 'plagued by depressison' since M Hutchence died. I understand she has tried to kill herself before.

I feel sorry for the children...and for Paula too.

This is such a tragedy. I actually shed a tear when I heard about this, this poor woman who has never done any harm to anyone as far as I can tell, has had more trauma in her life than anyone deserves to endure. Such a shame.

the little pipsqueak Hislop is no doubt aware, William-Hague-style young-old-man that he is, of J.B Priestley's AN INSPECTOR CALLS.....he ought to remember the Inspector's closing words to the family about "you all helped kill her", and think about that HIGNFY.

I thought about Hislop earlier, and then dismissed it. Compared to the terrible things Paula Yates had to endure in her life, her appearance on HIGNFY must have been a walk in the park. There's no blame there.

None of Paula's problems had really started when she did Have I Got News For You.

Yeah, and you can't really blame Hislop et al for a)her broken marriage b)the death of her lover c)the fact that the man she thought was her father, wasn't etc etc.

Ye Gods! Lighten up, mr Private Eye!

That was exactly the same kind of reaction on this site when fluffy little Gail Porter got the rough edge of Mark Lamarr's tongue... spotty teenagers queued up to shield her from the nasty man.

It's ironic isn't it - one person - Gary Olsen - a talented actor and family man gets struck down by cancer for no fault of his own and this page is littered by snide comments about his talent, another, a rather flakey woman, famous for having no talent whatsoever and who has been hell-bent on self-destruction for the best part of twenty years finally does it and suddenly shaking 'j'accuse' fingers are pointed towards Ian Hislop.

I was rather sad too when I heard it. The premature end of any life is sad. But the insane suggestion that Hislop should hate himself for attacking her is little short of sick. Her death does not change the fact that she was a self-publicist of the worst order who went onto a panel game famous for debunking guests and who deserved everything she got while on the show.

If it was Ian instead of Paula who fell to pieces and came to an unhappy end in a similar style , would 'someone who doesn't like Private Eye'
rend his garments and blame Paula for it,and say it all started when she calling him 'sperm of the devil?'

No. Of course not. Because on this site chaps look after themselves, and girlies need to be shielded behind someone's manly shoulder...Probably because there are so many Dr Who fans on this site, who think that every woman needs to be protected like Sarah Jane Smith.

Gah. I do not need to be protected by any fucking man, and my shoulders are probably much more manly than those of the 'chaps'.

It's a tragic event when anyone dies. Every death affects at least one other person and it matters not a jot if said person was 'flakey' or not. Fuck she's barely cold, leave it eh?

I think you'll find that Sarah Jane Smith did most of her protecting for herself.

Perhaps now Paula should become Queen Of Hearts, no wait, canonised for all the good work she has done. No that's not right.
How diferent was Paula's life to thousands of other people who we don't know and haven't meet. Maybe one of those deserves to have their own thread, where we can talk about who contributed to their deaths? Thought not.
It was a shock that she had died, so young, but i can't say i enjoyed anything she did when she was alive.

At times like this i find it best not to comment.

So ignore everything i've just said.

Paula worked hard with Bob Geldof on the Band/Live Aid project.

Our thoughts should be with Tiger Lily, who discovered her mother's body. She has lost both her parents in terrible circumstances.

Bollocks. For one thing, this assumes that she committed suicide, which while being the most likely explanation, hasn't yet been conclusively proved. Even if she did top herself, that single appearance on HIGNFY is unlikely to have upset the balance of her mind. And to follow your line of argument to its logical conclusion, all satire should be banned, lest it push someone over the edge. Once again, bollocks. She went on that show knowing full well what the set-up was, and knowing full well that she had made some pretty duff decisions while growing up in the public gaze, which someone like Hislop would have no compunction about referring to. If she couldn't take it, she didn't have to go on the show. As it was, I thought he was funny and she handled it very well. And why shouldn't she have? At that time of that show, she was a young woman with a kid she adored and a bloke she quite clearly fancied rotten. If you want to point the finger of blame at anyone, point it at Hutchence - accident or otherwise, it was his departure from this mortal coil that began her decline, closely followed by discovering that Hughie Green was her father. A hideous double blow.

Anyway, what matters at the moment is that a young woman has died and that her child has become an orphan. I didn't think much of her one way or another - but it would be a sad situation whoever she was.
