Newman and Baddiel-Live and in Pieces 1993 Posted Wed Sep 13 00:03:57 BST 2000 by Suiii

I found this tape buried under some books when I was having a tidy up (a rare event!) yesterday. I bought it from a bargain bin in a bookshop for 50p about 5 years ago and it's been ages since I watched it. The odd thing is that a fair amount of the celebrities they took the piss out of are now dead, and all the bands they mocked have now split up. Are they into voodoo or something?
Another interesting thing was that about 25 mins into the show someone walked in late, and Baddiel said "Oh, you made it?" or some remark to that effect, then said "Oh wait, thats Richard Herring, I know him quite well"
This show was live from Wembley, and it was amazing just how many people were there, and the reaction Newman and Baddiel got from the audience whenever they ventured onto the stage, it was as if the audience were watching The Beatles! The stuff was in general pretty mediocre and rehashed from the TV show, and there were some quite tricky moments, especially when someone referred to Baddiel as 'fat'.
So, what i was wondering was, was anyone on here *really* into N & B, or were they always just an overhyped 'student' act?

I thought Baddiel had his moments of brilliance, but I always loathed Rob Newman with a vengeance. Too whingey and self pitying for my tastes. The Radiohead of comedy, if you like.

That's odd because Newman loathes Radiohead.

Newman was funny in about 90-91 - then he started taking himself *very* seriously and it all went horribly wrong. Baddiel has always been funny in an ordinary sort of way. I never think much of him when he's not actually on TV and then, when I see him, he's usually pretty good.

Yeah I don't have a problem with Baddiel on his own, or even with Frank Skinner, but Rob Newman just isn't funny. The only good thing he did at the Wembley show was zoom through the Stadium, onto the stage on a motorised skateboard, then...sadly...he opened his mouth!

You're only saying that because he doesn't make you laugh.

Neither does Thom Yorke, doesn't mean I don't like him.

Thom Yorke is contemptible.

I've seen stuff-all of Mr Newman on telly (hey, I live in a different country, allright?) but having seen him live a few times in Edinburgh, I feel I must rush to his defence and say I've found him a damned interesting and funny live act. I like people who aren't afraid to tackle "important" comedy topics, although I find he (like Mark Thomas) can tend to come across as a little self aware that he is doing "important" comedy. Loses me a bit then - I get to see a fair bit of political/social comment comedy, so it ain't no novelty. (A regular performer at my comedy night in Melbourne does one-off multi-media presentations based on such topics as Marxist Economic Theory, the Federal Budget, and German Hyper Inflation. Frighteningly funny, lethally intelligent. Somehow manages to include stupic pop-culture references to Bros and Breakfast Club to simplify complex socio-economic concepts.)

Fair do's, Newman's Ben Elton was spot on...

I think the duo worked well together, but when they split Newman's weaknesses just came to the fore. The previous video ("from The M.W.E...") was quite weak though.
