I know it's easy to sneer at cliches in 1970's TV shows, but...

Believe it or not, John Thaw really does shout "You may be Special Branch but that doesn't make yer God Almighty!" at someone in at least one episode of THE SWEENEY.

Theres quite a few good Thaw quotes in the Sweeney.
"Get your trousers on. You're nicked."
"If you weren't who you are, I'd kick your arse up to your shoulder-blades."
And the best one:
"We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner. So unless you want a kicking you tell us where those photos are."

I love telly! Police/detectives can get away with such utterly ridiculous stretched metaphors. I always think it's the voice of frustrated, jobbing script writers, wanting their own series of BBC films.
Only 'Shoestring' seemed to get it right. Plausible at least.
