The Velvet Underground - 'The Black Angel's Death Song'
Durutti Column - 'Sketch For Summer'
The Sea Nymphs - "Dog Eat Spine"
Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
Underground - Ben Folds Five
The Timewarp?
No. I'll go for depressing but nice.
Beth Orton - I Wish I never Saw The Sunshine
Ailie, you need one of my compilation tapes!
Oh thank you so much TJ, you sarcastic bastard!
My musical tastes are more far reaching than that... but I *like* that song.
*folds arms*
Leave me alone.
I wasn't being sarcasting, just nice!
Hmmm...
Okay :0)
I still love you!
'helpful nele morrissey does the washing' by framptons jaw
TJ - 'I wasn't being sarcasting'
Oh, you little sweetie!
I wasn't mad at you really!
How could I be? :0)
Ailie & TJ - 'Something Stupid'
>'Something Stupid'
No, that's just TJ with his spelling.
"Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head" - They Might Be Giants
"let's get this topic back on track" - Anonymous
Belle & Sebastian - Judy and the Dream of Horses.
THe Divine Comedy - My Lovely Horse.
Or if that can't be cleared, just "Your Daddy's Car" - the version from the Best Of, not the terrible pre-rethink one from Liberation.
*leaves, humming it*
Beach Boys - 'Surf's Up'
The Breeders - Happiness is a Warm Gun
(oh, all right, I give in)
Garbage - Number 1 Crush
(no, really, Ms. Manson does lovely little moans all the way through. Mmm.)
The Mr T Experience - The Weather Is Here (Wish You Were Beautiful)
Boo Radleys - Lazarus (it's always 1993 round my house)
Or failing that - Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsalm.
Colourbox - World Cup Theme
Tarkan-Gecenin rkek Kanatlarnda
or
Skunk Anansie-Good Things Don't Always Come to You
"Fists Of Love" - Big Black
"Monkeyland"- The Chameleons
The Get Up Kids - Don't Hate Me
The Idle Race 'Worn Red Carpet'
Blessed Ethel - "2 Minute Mind"
YESYESYES! 'Two Minute Mind' was a great song... had it in my head just the other day despite the fact that I haven't heard it in years. Might have to dig it out now...
"Boxer Beat"- Joe Boxer
Aneka - Japanese Boy
The Clash - 'White Man in Hammersmith Palais'
Chris Morris 'Eat Whale Meat'
East St O'Neill - Animals That Swim
(and "Your Daddy's Car" isn't on Liberation, it's on Promenade, or whatever the following Divine Comedy album's called...)
*takes out Liberation* Oh? So... track 5 on Liberation would be what?
The Promenade track listing doesntt contain YDC (believe me, I know them by heart). Promenade (actually the story of a weekend by the sea, if you believe Hannon, or even care)contains:
Bath
Going Downhill Fast
The Booklovers
A Seafood Song
Geronimo
Don't Look Down
When The Lights Go Out All Over Europe
The Summerhouse
Neptune's Daughter
A Drinking Song
Ten Seconds To Midnight
Tonight We Fly
Whereas Liberation is:
Festive Road
Death Of A Supernaturalist
Bernice Bobs Her Hair
I Was Born Yesterday
Your Daddy's Car
Europop
Timewatching
The Pop Singer's Fear (also another one that was re-thought)
Queen Of The South
Victoria Falls
Three Sisters
Europe By Train
Lucy.
I'm sorry, but this time I *am* right.
This is rare, and I intend to cherish it.
(On rereading, that sounds terribly argumentative. It wasn't meant to be, though I do take objection to being corrected on one of the few things I know "down pat", as they say in America.)
The "Liberation" version of 'Your Daddy's Car' is superior anyway, and in a desperate ploy to extend the usual me/justin/jason hazeley/corpses argument of "we heard it when it was on the radio and it was better then", I bought "Liberation" in 1993 when you were still istening to Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana, so I know best. Ha!
Well come on, I've got to maintain my forum character _somehow_...
>The Clash - 'White Man in Hammersmith Palais'
This should be played at least four times in succession.
Sonic Youth - 100%
>The "Liberation" version of 'Your Daddy's Car' is superior anyway
And the Pop SInger's Fear as well. And Timewatching surely. Should have left them alone.
Spirea X - "Chlorine Dream"
A-ha - Take On Me
(and NOT the awful A1 cover)
Chapterhouse - "Pearl"
Frank Black - "Hang On To Your Ego"
Teenage Fanclub - "What You Do To Me"
Godiego 'Monkey'
That Dinosaur Jr one I used to like.. oh, you know the one.
Yeah, that was a good'un, wasn't it?
That other one they did was rubbish though.
I know. Who would have thought it was the same band!? Unbelievable.
I'm not suggesting "Unbelievable" by EMF though. Perish the thought. Or anything by Jesus Jones. Jesus and Mary Chain perhaps.
Jesus Jones 'Welcome Back Victoria'
Magazine: "Rhythm Of Cruelty"
Yeah, some Magazine would be good.
"Motorcade" or "Shot By Both Sides"
Just to make the other stuff sound good:
Marillion - "Lavender Blue"
Motorcade is superperb.
Let's have "The Time Warp" by Damian, just to keep our student listeners happy.
Iannis Xenakis: "Jalons"
As far as the old vs new things: the new Pop Singer's Fear is, to my mind, better. for one, it doesn't have the organ solo (ugh) or the twangy guitar bits. It's more of a crowd-pleaser in the new edition, perhaps why it's released. Though when I first found the promo disc, i was a little sceptical.
1993? well done. You're older than me. That doesn't make you any more of a fan though.
Yeah.
I'm sorry.
I'm grumpy today.
Oh now come on, I'd never claim to be a bigger fan of anyone/anything on the back of such flimsy evidence.
I mean, I heard the original Chris Morris Radio 1 show back in 1990, but theoretically someone who only discovered him with "jam" could actually be a bigger fan than me.
And that _wasn't_ sarcasm.
Anyhow. Pop singer's fear... is on now, and.... no. The guitar is much much much less in tune with the whole endeavor on the earlier version. Of course, claiming a single is good because it sounds "professional" is like praising a house because "it's got white walls", but it definitely sounds more marketable and shows more of the talent behind TDC than the original version.
Though Queen Of The South shouldn't be altered at all. It's fantastic. Er. Apart from that odd bit in the middle. no... stop it, alex.
[Please don't look at me that way, you'll only make me want to say something I'll regret. You are April, you are May? What a stupid thing to say. Forgive me and forget that I ever opened my mouth.]
oh please die under anaesthetic tomorrow bitch.
And who the melted milkybar sang that?
Whitehouse!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!
"If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly & The Family Stone.
"Underground" by Ben Folds Five.
(I know it's already been mentioned, but it doesn't get played nearly enough outside my own flat.)
"You Haven't Done Nothin'" by Stevie Wonder.
(For people who only think of him as doing I Just Called....)
One more, just for the moment...
"Dad I'm In Jail" by Was Not Was. Blithering excellence, all 77 seconds of it.
So, when do we approach the Radio Authority, then?
I, personally, can't bloody wait.
"Farmyard Connection" Fun Boy Three
In fact nearly anything off the "Waiting" album...
"Mr Rubik" - Barron Knights.
Reminds me of the 80s - ie. waiting for the 90s to start...
His Name Is Alive: "We Hold The Land In Great Esteem"
Sorry to blather on, but if you like Magazine go to http://shotbybothsides.com . You'll love it there.
Also, TJ - I would personally choose 'Just Like A C**t' by WHITEHOUSE or anything off 'Dedicated to Peter Kurten, Mass Murderer and Slayist'. Nasty music perhaps but the words were delivered with good diction.
If you go to the Whitehouse page you can get a Bennetizer which translates anything you write into sweary speak. Now you know.
I would have thought a Bennetizer would turn everything you write into a track by a mediocre 90s britpop band.
"Mum has gone to Iceland..."
William Bennett is the singer in Whitehouse just in case that needed clearing up. Albini produces them and Wb has appeared on a few Nurse With WOund records.
Off into my 'dark' room,
Bent
13th Floor Elevators - She Lives In A Time Of Her Own
JAMC - Reverberation (cover of 13FE song)
Badly Drawn boy - Oh, i don't know, someone else chose. I'm not a DJ...

Sonic Youth - "Eliminator Jr."
>Frank Black - "Hang On To Your Ego"
>
>Lauren Laverne - "I Fell Out Of A Tree"
>
Hey!
I recently heard both those songs!
Chameleons- "In Shreds"
Sensurround - Blind Faith
The Wedding Present - Kennedy
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
RE: Wedding Present. If someone could tell me which of their songs has the line (or a line that sounds like) 'too much apple pie' I will be eternally grateful. Cheers!
It's Kennedy! What are the chances etc etc...
I seem to remember reading somewhere it was an oblique reference to a poison used by the CIA for assassinations which has an apple aroma.
Wow! And all these years I thought it was a nice song about a simple Yorkshireman who liked desserts a bit too much. What a fool I am, eh readers?
Oh, and thanks... you've answered a question that's been bugging me for years!
I'd pick "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" by the Weddoes, largely for the jingle-jangle.
Are they ever going to get back together, do you think? Obviously we have The Ukrainians, Cinerama and Cha Cha Cohen as alternatives, but nothing beats the real thing - no?

"Debaser" - Pixies
"Far Gone & Out" - Jesus & Mary Chain
"Jesus was a Terrorist" - Jello Biafra & Nomeansno

Dillinger Four - 'Smells Like OK Soda'
The Replacements - 'Customer'
Descendents - 'Get The Time'
Boris The Sprinkler - 'Sheena's Got A Microwave'

Time to resurrect this thread...
How about;
Orbital - The Girl with the Sun in her Head
and
Tom Waits - Underground
Ah, it's good to be back.
Jets to Brazil - 'Little Light'
Tomorrow - Why, Caught In A Web, My White Bicycle, Real Life Permanent Dream and Revolution.

For Lionel Ritchie fans...
Cousteau - "She Don't Hear Your Prayer"
"The (Real) Manic Street Preachers - 'Archives Of Pain'"
Oh I see, you're an 'old' fan are you? I'd pick:
MSP - "Sculpture Of Man"
That's an obscure b-side, aaahhhh, that I used to have a copy of before I realised both the old and new versions of the band were rubbish, aaaahhhh again.
Bjork - All is full of love
(how true)
Mother Love Bone - Captain Hi-Top
No, it isn't aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
My loathing of new-style MSPs has nothing to do with the stereotypical 'depressed over Richey disappearing bit'. In fact, I thought he was a hyopcritical wanker. It's just that they've not been any good since then.
They were alright before Richey joined.
What, when that Flicker bloke was rhythm guitarist???
(i hope we get to see the video for All Is Full Of Love. Gives me the shivers.)
Smashing Pumpkins - Raindrops & Sunshowers - because it's stuck in my head AGAIN.
Broadcast - Come on let's go
Radiohead - Everything in its right place
I've fallen in love with the new Radiohead album and you're all welcome to the wedding.
All copies of everything by Radiohead should be dumped in the Solent and that is all there is to say about the entire subject.
>All copies of everything by Radiohead should be dumped in the Solent and that is all there is to say about the entire subject.
Ah Jon, the sort of insightful comment we've come to love you for :) I'd argue the point about Radiohead, but frankly I'm so sick of debates about "Kid A" being good/rubbish that I'm just past caring now.
Have only heard 'Kid A' once, but I think even people who hate Radiohead would find it at least interesting. It's certainly not 'OK Computer 2'
Anyway, how about
Aztec Camera - Oblivious
Orbital - Belfast
Buzzcocks - Everybody's Happy Nowadays
Morally, I cannot condone anything Radiohead have recorded.
Cibo Matto: "Sugar Water"
New York Flat Top Box - Naked City
The Weakerthans - Watermark
Mr Griffiths - you mentioned Propagandhi, so have you heard the Weakerthans? An ex-memeber of Propagandhi is in them, they're more indie-rock (with hints of folk and country at times, but not enough to spoil it)than punk though.
Josef K - 'Chance Meeting'
Wire - 'The 15th'
Television - 'Friction'
The Pastels - 'Comin' Through'
>Josef K - 'Chance Meeting'
Oh, well done. Fantastic choice.
Have we had any Propaganda yet? Let's sling in their version of "Sorry For Laughing" too.
Propaganda - "Vicious Circle"
Which I've never actually heard...
The Bodines - "Therese"
Nor that one neither. Anyone got a copy I could hear?
Why not mail me on [email protected],
and we can figure out which obscure tracks we'd like to put on compilation tapes for each other?
Oh yeah, that reminds me..... shit..
Hmmm...
No, I have done it, it's just lost.
And I'm lost without the soothing mancunian sounds of Crispy Ambulance and Easterhouse...
Stick a Tools You Can Trust track on there as well, Sam.
Hmm.. thing is, this is all around the time I would have been listening mainly to the Nephilim, Virgin Prunes and Bauhaus, so I haven't got much in the way of 80s Manchester Indie. I have got old pointy shoes and crimpers though.
I've vaguely heard about The Virgin Prunes from Fall and MBV websites. They were an Irish band led by Gavin Friday, who guests on "The Wonderful & Frightening World Of The Fall" album, because they did a tour together. What else did they and Friday do?
[There's a MES interview from about 1980 where Smith talks about the tour the 2 bands did. He complains that they couldn't go drinking together because the Prunes' outfits caused them to not be served, apparently].
World Of Twist 'The Lights'
The La's 'I Can't Sleep'
New Fast Automatic Daffodils 'Big'
Blur 'Luminous'
Aztec Camera 'We Can Send Letters'
XTC 'Cynical Days'
Chris Morris and Amon Tobin 'Bad Sex'
Serge Gainsbourg 'Un Poison Violent C'est Ca L'amour'
ABC 'Show Me'
Ladytron 'Ladybird'
The Real Manic Street Preachers 'The Intense Humming Of Evil'
Pink Floyd 'Pow.R Toc.H'
"The Real Manic Street Preachers 'The Intense Humming Of Evil'"
That is the naffest song title ever. Richey Edwards had nothing to say about the Holocaust, or fascism, or anything, he simply appropriated them as images to make himself important.
Position Normal - jimmy had jane
Sea Nymphs - Lilly White's Party
Can't say I agree with you there Jon...
My Bloody Valentine 'No More Sorry'
Epics special:
MBV "Soon" (7 minutes)
Stevie Wonder "Another Star" (8 mins)
Propaganda "Dream Within A Dream" (9 mins)

Art Of Noise "Moments In Love" (10 mins)

Brian Eno - "Thursday Afternoon" (61 minutes)
Pink Floyd - "Echoes" (25 minutes)
Pink Floyd - "Atom Heart Mother" (24 minutes)
Jamiroquai - 'Blow Your Mind' (18 minute version)
Pink Floyd - "Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast" (original vinyl version) (infinite)
The Who 'Extra Extra' (15 seconds)
Long:
Insides - "Clear Skin" (not sure of the exact timing, but I'm sure it more than covered the second half of the '94 FA Cup semi between Man Utd and Oldham... which was appropriately goalless).
Isn't there some kind of music installation near the Blackwall Tunnel which is supposed to run for 1000 years?
Short:
There are a couple of tracks on the Gas album put out by em:t in 1995 (not to be confused with the Gas who record for Mille Plateaux) which clock in at well under a second - one is something like 0.015s long (not that I've been sad enough to run it through CoolEdit or anything - oh no). They have titles but - bit of a cop-out this - they're not indexed on the CD.
Topol 'If I Were A Rich Man'
If it's long tracks you're after....
Tortoise "Djed" (20 mins)
Stereolab "Jenny Ondioline" (18 mins)
Stereolab "Refractions In The Plastic Pulse" (17 mins)
VU "Sister Ray" (15 mins)
Mogwai "Mogwai Fear Satan" (14 mins)
Faust "Krautrock" (11 mins)
"...and I'm afraid that's all we've got time for today, kids..."
Buffalo Tom - 'Mineral'
Bjork - "It's oh so quiet"
"Wealth" by Talk Talk
"Black Milk" by Massive Attack with Liz Fraser
"Baby I Love You So" by Colourbox
"Free Man In Paris" by Joni Mitchell
"We Live Again" by Beck
"At The Chime Of A City Clock" by Nick Drake
"Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas
"I Know It's Over" by The Smiths
"Live Bed Show" by Pulp
"Playground Love" by Air
"The Captain Of Her Heart" by Double
I agree wholeheartedly with the choice of 'Captain Of Her Heart'
More:
My Bloody Valentine 'Strawberry Wine'
Talk Talk 'Does Caroline Know?'
Teenage Fanclub 'I Don't Know'
Wilson Phillips - "Hold On"
Anti-epics
Pixies 'Allison' 78 seconds
Erika Eigen 'I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper' 60 seconds
Wildhearts 'Baby Strange' 52 seconds
Wire 'Field Day for the Sundays' 28 seconds
Napalm Death 'You Suffer' 0.5 seconds
I saw a copy of the relevant Napalm Death album once, and I should point out pedantically that the track to which you refer is in fact correctly known as "You Suffer - But Why?"
It does last for half a second, mind. I believe JP played it loads of times on the same show when it first came out, which was naughty, because you're not supposed to play the same record more than once per R1 show (though he played "Teenage Kicks" twice when it came out, and I heard Mark Goodier play "Popscene" by Blur twice when it came out).
Anyway, you could have had:
Minor Threat - "Straight Edge" (45 seconds)
Radcliffe played Eric Matthews' excellent 'Fanfare!' twice in a row when he first heard it, towards the end of his show some time late in 1995. He was audibly awestruck, and just said "I want to hear that again".
And still none of you bought it.

It was better on the radio then, eh?
Laughing Lenny Cohen - "Stories of the Street"
Sparks - "Get in the Swing"
Pulp - "They Suffocate at Night"
Gina G - "Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit"
>Radcliffe played Eric Matthews' excellent 'Fanfare!' twice in a row when he first heard it, towards the end of his show some time late in 1995. He was audibly awestruck, and just said "I want to hear that again".

I bought the album, went back and investigated Cardinal, got the second LP in Baltimore (at a time when it didn't look like being picked up by a UK label), got the Richard Davies LP, and put tracks from each and every one of them on practically every tape and MD comp I've done since. And no, even *that* didn't work. I've tried similar techniques with Laika and (in another life) Sharkboy, and they resolutely failed to become famous.
Pah, I'm wasting my bleedin' time...
Have you tried buying up large quantities of the band's records from the shops, to cause them to have a high chart placing?
It's a long shot, but it has been known to work in the past.

I sit here at my desk looking at the back of the 1988 Scum/FETO CD, and it is listed as 'You Suffer'
Good to speak to you again Jon...
Well, I saw a Napalm Death cassette copy of the album... oh, hang on, maybe that was the complete lyrics, rather than the title. Yes, you're probably right then.
Not much of a tune, either way.
No, not really.
About a million years ago on this thread, I drunkenly attempted to correct Subbes that the Divine Comedy song "Your Daddy's Car" was on Promenade, not Liberation.
I didn't click on the forum (it vanished) for ages, and didn't get a chance to apologise.
Sorry.
I've worked out why I thought it was on Promenade. I had one of those editions of Promenade that had loads of string quartet versions of old stuff on it, on a bonus CD, one of which was YDC. And very nice it was too.
BTW, is it just me, or have the D.Comedy become a bit rubbish since they became a proper, smelly, real band? They were a much better poncy fantasy in Hannon's bulbous skull.
Butler, I agree.
Promenade and Liberation were far and away the best
>It does last for half a second, mind. Cuts both ways, of course. I once heard Simon Bates play "Loving You" by Feargal Sharkey twice in a row one morning in 1985. Steve Wright also used to play Napalm Death on Radio 1, but this was "for a laugh", surprisingly.
Mark Goodier played "Buzzing" by Top twice in a row on the Evening Session once. Anyone that remembers this song wins 10 indie points.
Minor Threat are excellent, Jon. Hurrah!
Didn't Top become Gene later? Or was that Spin?
FACT: Steve Wright played the original version of "You Love Us" by MSP, as part of his "pretentious music critic" thing (which was great btw). The record was rubbish, despite what the revisionists say.
"Loving You" was great btw. The later Undertones stuff is great as well - well worth getting the "best of" compilation, that has all the hits and a fair sample of the unsuccessful last album.
>"Loving You" was great btw.
Don't think the solo Sharkey stuff works at all - I resent his attitude to Undertones anyway, he was into being a pop star, and even pretty much disowned most of the Us stuff later on. So I can't say I had a lot of time for him since.
>The later Undertones stuff is great as well - well worth getting the "best of" compilation, that has all the hits and a fair sample of the unsuccessful last album.
Agree completely - let's have "It's Going To Happen!" as the next track on the show, shall we?
No, let's have:
Julie Ocean
When Saturday Comes
The Love Parade
Forever Paradise
... all Undertones
>No, let's have:
>
>Julie Ocean
>When Saturday Comes
>The Love Parade
>Forever Paradise
>
>... all Undertones
I'm happy with all those. What's wrong with IGTH, Jon?
Nothing, it's just I prefer the later stuff.
"Get Over You" is my favourite early one. Sorry John, I just don't think "Teenage Kicks" is the greatest single ever. Top 30 maybe.
>Nothing, it's just I prefer the later stuff.
81's quite late - Julie Ocean only came out just after IGTH.
The Bird That You Can't See by Apples in Stereo
Anyone heard it?
They play it a lot on xfm.Oh this is probably an American site, right?
Stupid me.
No can't be: you talk about Black Books, oh well leave a message if you've heard it.
