The Onion Posted Thu Aug 17 01:00:48 BST 2000 by subbes

....It may have taken me a while, but I now have a paper copy of the Onion (the place i live, being small-town America, doesn't appreciate satire, and i had to go to Chicago to get it).

My advice is not to bother, as the online-stuff is the pickings without all of the advertisments and that boring AV Club bit.

I think the AV Club thing is actually quite good sometimes - they've had some good interviews there. Jello Biafra, Michael Palin, Michael J. Nelson (of Mystery Science Theatre 3000), Alec Empire...

I would add to this thread but i'd be misconstrued as being derivative. There is only one Onion.
God bless her and all who surf onto her.
Or you could go to... no, no i can't... i don't want to get crucified again for trying to do something...

Can i go on record here as saying Gusset Weekly is shit and all the people write it are talentless shits and it's generally just shitty and it's so shittingly derivative and for shit's sake! it's so shite! it's shittier than the shittiest shit ever...

Saves you the bother, y'know.

oh, i nearly forgot... i am also a cunt and a twat and don't listen to me anyway.
Or even look at this post.
And don't even chastise me for posting this message over two blocks, i have already done it to myself. Yes, and that probably means i had a wank as well...
Thankyou. i hope you will spend the time i have saved you wisely. Read a book, call a loved one, listen to or watch something that will change your life forever. Enjoy it.

So, having killed this thread, is there anything you'd like to add?

...ooo yes. I prefer The Weekly to t'Onion, if only because of "We Are Britons".

Dan realised that all publicity, even of the embarrassing sort, is still publicity. (People may now be visiting it just to see how, er, "shittingly bad" it is.)

i love the onion. i agree. i love the onion.

i write for something in a similar vein that can never and will never reach the giddy heights...

i've never read the weekly. ever.

and that's about it.

oh, one thing... if i can kill a thread with a positive message does that say something about me or you?

i also don't see what i said as embarrassing or advertising.. it wasn't the initial intention anyhoo... it was to just have a laugh... but seeing as you're all in serious mode... cor, is'nt everyone crap... only my opinion counts... etc etc...

Dan, unless this is another joke, you're doing it again. Read this message back to yourself. Who is in serious mode? Justin? Subbes? or you? Who has said 'only my opinion counts' or even intimated it? Nobody. Nobody at all. You claim that you want everyone to think for themselves and express their own opinion, but when it is critical of you, you claim they are trying to make out only their opinion counts. Who has said 'isn't everyone crap'? or anything like it? This thread is praising The Onion and The Weekly as far as I can see. It's a positive thread, the kind you want. What is the problem???

Dan... stop replying to yourself!

Maybe if you wait a little while before you hit "Post Message", maybe even tidying up the ellipsises that litter every sentance, the next ide will come to you.

If not, screw it, it wasn't important....

Al, well done. I wasn't in serious mode...

"Who has said 'only my opinion counts' or even intimated it? Nobody. Nobody at all. Well, if you read the threads back i was accused of being ultra negative about everything ("is here nothing that you like") and also of saying that only my opinion is right or just. Incidentally, neither is true, but i was just using it, AS HUMOUR.

"This thread is praising The Onion and The Weekly as far as I can see. It's a positive thread, the kind you want. What is the problem???"

No problem at all. Not one.

Well, that isn't 100% true... The onion should come out more often...

PS
i reread the 'riting to myself thing subbes' and it does look like that. i was trying to write it so there was no doubt. I was saying, to whoever had posted previously, i love the onion, i agree (with everything you said about it), i really do love the onion (i'm not pissing you about). sorry for any confusion.

I think we've identified the problem. If these comments are HUMOUR, I am not recognizing it because they AREN'T FUNNY.

Glad you like The Onion so much. It's fab. Do you have either of the books?

'Our Dumb Century' is magnificent, a true labour of love, the product of hours of slavish writing and design. Their purported "Best Of", however, seemed to have been hurriedly photocopied from whatever old issues were lying around in the office while the publishers' courier waited impatiently downstairs. The difference in quality between the two books was startling. I can only hope that one day they'll just bring out all the issues as bound volumes - if Viz can manage it, then they certainly can...
