Gorman's Conquest Posted Mon Aug 14 10:03:46 BST 2000 by Simon Harries

A colleague at work today just pointed out a little article at the bottom of today's page three about how "watching telly's Richard and Judy boosts your IQ by resting the brain, according to a new study".
Then I noticed the article immediately above it - "Gorman's Conquest - Comic Dave Gorman is travelling the world - in a bid to meet every other Dave Gorman on the planet".
Knowing how so many of you love this man - I myself have no opinion of him - I thought you'd all like to check it out! He's pictured with namesakes in New York, in Norway and in the UK

Does anyone else think that this is a wind-up (i.e. a bit of puff to promote his stand-up show)? I also have no opinion on the fella, but I did enjoy Mrs Merton.

Cheerio

Steve

This is honestly what Dave Gorman's Edinburgh show is this year. Check this out:

My name - Richard Bell - is fairly common. Bell is about the third or fourth commonest surname in Northern Ireland, and Richard is fairly common too. I've heard of about 15 throughout the world, and I've met two, both in a video shop where I used to work.

There is a Canadian Piano player who has backed some more famous people. There is an English Naturalist too.

I've ever met another Simon Harries, or heard of one. I should think there might be some in Wales, but to be honest I don't really care. If they were related to me, at most, two or three times removed I would care, at least we'd have grandparents or uncles/aunties in common and it would be so interesting to sit down and say, "So, you're called Simon too, how nice..." but then, none of my Harriesian relatives in Wales are called Simon. There's a Lyndon, and a John, and that's it! So, I don't care. And I don't think I'd care to see Dave Gorman talking about other Dave Gorman's around the world... It could be amusing, but I don't see how unless he's terribly inventive.
Is Dave Gorman terribly inventive?

You're right, it is no bad thing Ailie. It's a travesty. I wish there was at least one of you per town to ease the trials of town life.

How many kinder surprises are there?

And are there enough Russell Peters to satisfy them all?

Millions, all containing a crappy toy... Still their exterior tastes delicious! ;0)

Well, do an 'ego search' - type your name into yahoo! (or even better http://www.alltheweb.com and choose "exact phrase"). YOU may find some namesakes.

Nope. No way.

Oh I don't mind sharing.

And Ailie, how did you know I had a toy inside of me?

Rob Sedgebeer certainly seems to have a large presence on the net - 125 hits and they all seem to be his.

If Bods is reading this - I think he should check out his namesake:

Once while I was searching for Chris Morris, I found his double, a gay teenage activist.

And Harry Hill has a doppleganger in the form of a elderly black janitor at some Canadian school.

DAVE GORMAN AND THE DAVE GORMANS

DAVE GORMAN: Hello I'm Dave Gorman and today I'm meeting yet another Dave Gorman. So Dave, I'm your famous English namesake. Does that mean anything to you?

DAVE GORMAN: Nein.

DAVE GORMAN: I was brought up as a Catholic, what kind of childhood did you have?

DAVE GORMAN: Meine Mutter und Vater...

DAVE GORMAN: English please Dave, bitter.

DAVE GORMAN: My mother and father would not have brought me up to look like an ape Dave. And I was raised a Lutheran.

DAVE GORMAN: So, so far it's just the name we have in common. Ok. Let's crack on. Do you like comedy? Are you good at telling jokes?

DAVE GORMAN: No. I am a serious person at heart and I dislike triviality. Why are you visiting me?

DAVE GORMAM: It started with an idea I had...

DAVE GORMAN: Where iz the idea now Dave?

DAVE GORMAN: Well it's gone beyond an idea now, I've got backing. I'm going all over the globe meeting people with the same name as myself.

DAVE GORMAN: But why do you do this, it iz nonsense.

DAVE GORMAN: It's part of my Edinburgh show. I don't want to go out there and just make people laugh, I want them to think as well.

DAVE GORMAN: But they will think you're just showing them postcards. They with think you're, if I can say this, you're a vanker.

DAVE GORMAN: But this hasn't been done before, I'm on new ground.

DAVE GORMAN: Why don't you stick to the monkey impressions. You're good at those. I think you're wasting your money.

DAVE GORMAN: Yes but hopefully the BBC will get interested and I get then waste their money.

DAVE GORMAN: Does your BBC waste money like that? Will they give funding to such an obviously stupid idea?
DAVE GORMAN: I've had more money out of Channel 4 for less. What you don't understand Dave is all you've got to do is get your name known. It doesn't matter how stupid or how lame your idea is as long as 30 000 people know your name you can ask for the earth. Or in my case travel around in on the BBC's money. Of course if this doesn't work I'll start doing the money impressions again. Never fear Dave, I'll get something out of this.

DAVE GORMAN: Goodbye Dave and may you find the happiness you seek.

Seconded. Every other month some Sunday features writer with a commonplace name seems to get sent out to find people with the same name and.. talk to them about it. The most recent offender was the Evening Standard, about a month ago as I recall. For fuck's sake stop it.

I'd be more impressed if they got writers with really unusual names to track down *their* doppelgangers, no matter what the cost. Regular despatches from around the globe from an increasingly haggard and malnourished Skadgeley Horbligz pleading fruitlessly to be allowed home to see his family would certainly pep up my Sunday morning reading.

(it's not Skadgeley Horbligz, unfortunately)
