Paul Garner Posted Thu Aug 10 14:48:58 BST 2000 by TJ

Anyone know what he's done apart from 11 OCS and Chris Morris' R1 show?

Hmmm... PG ain't that bad... he was good on CM's show, and is one of the more passable contributors to 11 OCS...

Suiii, can we please see a picture of your face???

No he's no relation Suii (well at least I hope not. I've only got one relation in showbiz: John Blundel, the first daddy in Scum. He got beaten up in the toilet.)

Paul Garner contributed several attempts at Morris-like vox pops to the Mark Tonderai show on Radio 1, shortly after his stint with Chris.

Tonderai's stuff was never particularly good, but he did manage to get away with all kinds of stuff, as his show went out in the middle of the night, and no-one got round to listening to tapes of it until some three weeks later, by which point an "Oi!' and a slapped wrist were far too late and a bit futile...

Prior to working with CM, he was a DJ at Radio Bedford. And, in many ways, he still is.

Re:Mark Tonderai

I remember Paul ringing up a girl on one of those cards in a London phone box (y'must've seen 'em). He grilled her on which endangered animal she'd most like to see bought and protected by London Zoo.

Pretty weak really. I remember Tonderai sycophantically giggling all the way through it.

I always wondered what happened to those appearances. Thanks for telling us, 'Gwai.

Didn't Garner and Tonderai make a pilot about three years ago for Channel 4 as part of their Comedy Lab series? Didn't see it, but I don't remember any particularly positive responses.

One of my correspondents once mentioned that he used to know Mr Garner, and furnished me with various bits of information... he's from somewhere around Cambridge and was originally a musician, playing in various local bands in the 80s and early 90s, first as a drummer and later as a singer/guitarist. Then came what must have been the Radio Bedford job, then a stint writing for Radio 4 panel games like "First Impressions". Then the Chris Morris show, and then stardom beckoned... or not, as the case may be. Oh, and he was going out (as of a couple of years ago) with the daughter of Chas. Out of Chas'n'Dave.

As far as I know, he mainly earns his living writing with Ant Hines. They've written for The Jack Docherty Show, Clarkson, that kind of thing.

I also know that he's now married (to whom, I cannot recall) and that he did indeed do a Comedy Lab with Mark Tonderai called 'The Homies' -- a spoof soap opera that was absolutely appalling. (Not necessarily his fault though -- I don't know the background or politics of the situation.)

He's quite a pleasant bloke, though.
