Comedians in pop videos Posted Wed Aug 9 23:28:58 BST 2000 by Justin

Of all people, Sadowitz springs to mind. He's in at least two: "Ultra Modern Nursery Rhymes" by Terry [Hall], Blair & Anouchka (1989) and, of course, "Ebeneezer Goode" by The Shamen.

Hugh Laurie's in an Annie Lennox one (is it Walking On Broken Glass? not sure).

Anyway....someone else can have a go now....

Not in the video, but Adam and Joe directed 'Sweet Johnny' by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and used their stuffed toys in that.

Oh, and Ali G's in Madonna new video. Just like Mike Myers was in her last.

awful? New Order? These words NEVER belong in the same sentence. 'World in Motion' is the best football record *ever*. (World's tallest dwarf for some, but there you go...)
Ade Edmondson directed Kate Bush's Experiment IV as well. Vic Reeves appears in some very dodgy video by The Band of Holy Joy, in his pre-Big Night Out days.

Adrian Edmondson directed Squeeze's Dali-esque "Hourglass" video. Phill Jupitus was in "Happy Hour" by the Housemartins and Billy Bragg's "You Woke Up My Neighborhood" and I think Dawn French was in Alison Moyet's "Whispering Your Name".

It obviously pays well.

Going a bit further off the point, lets not forget that Lard (Marc Riley) was bassist and guitarist in The Fall from 1977-82, making 5 albums with them, but no promo videos, alas. He does appear in live footage from the period however.

Does anyone know how many copies The Fall have sold in total, of all their albums put together? Just wondering.

At least one St Etienne one - possibly something from "Tiger Bay"? I've never seen it, but apparently Sarah Cracknell does something unspeakable with a teddy bear.

Morrissey was once asked about 'Morrissey The Consumer Monkey' by Select/Vox/Q/whatever. He answered 'I wasn't too enamoured by his creator' before suggesting that Bob Mortimer should ditch Reeves and strike out on his own.

Paul McCartney appeared in Tracey Ullman's 'They Don't Know' promo (purportedly as a favour returned for Ullman appearing in 'Give My Regards To Broad Street'). EDIT NEWS: Ullman's high-noted 'Bayy-beee' in said song appears to have been sampled from the original by Kirsty MacColl. Can anyone confirm this?

Ade Edmonson also directed Sandie Shaw's 'Please Help My Cause Against Loneliness' video. There were many cardboard cut-outs I recall.

The Spitting Image puppets have appeared in a few pop vids unconnected with Chicken Song amusements. There was a Genesis song ('Land Of Confusion'?) which had them as Fluck & Law depictions. This came quite soon after Phil Collins was reported as being upset over the Spitting Image parody of him.

Dick Emery and Lance Percival provided voices for The Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine'

What about pop stars in comedy shows? Or has that been done George Harrison in RWT/The Rutles. The real Sting appearing in Spitting Image ('Every Bomb You Make'), Macca in 'Bread'. Mark E.Smith in 'The Pall Bearers Revue', etc, etc...

The Genesis song is indeed 'Land Of Confusion' - and I've got the video (purely because of its Spitting Image links), if anyone wants it. It's actually really good.

Weren't Carter USM in Newman And Baddiel In Pieces? Kim Wilde in Big New Year's Eve Night Out of course... and Lulu in Python...

The song was by Morrissey, and he was one of the cut-outs.

Loads of early 90s indie nobodies were in Sean's Shorts, which was rubbish.

I bet the tabloids wish they'd got a hold of that one!

South Park and The Simpsons have had their fair share... the best ones woule have to be Robert Smith defeating Barbara Streisand, and Smashing Pumpkins on The Simpsons, which allowed for some good jokes at the expense of alternative youth culture. Spinal Tap on The Simpsons was a bit of a let-down, though.

Wasn't it actually a full-on Smiths collaboration? Following on from her dodgy 'Hand In Glove' cover. Think the Morrissey cut-out was the last to be revealed (in a sort of 'It was me all the time' way). But The Chart Show never showed that bit.

Stephen, You Don't Eat Meat...

Kenny Everett used to get all the pop stars who appeared on his shows to appear in sketches too. Too numerous to mention here. The article has enough of it.

Lulu as Adrian Mole's mother in the second series.

Etc

There was that sketch on French & Saunders, too (at least I *think* it was one of their's) where they put Ralph McTell in the dock for not having 'the dots' (guitar chord diagrams) in his songbook. That one also featured Lemmy, Mark knopfler and a couple of others as expert witnesses.

Alison Moyet appeared in a Lenny Henry sketch once also.

Ant & Dec/PJ & Duncan on Fist Of Fun.

And probably about 300 others....
