Channel to buy Granada Posted Fri Aug 4 14:19:03 BST 2000 by It's true I tell you! It's true!

The Jersey-based CTV Group is to buy Granada. They plan to rebrand all the regions under the Channel brand which will create a bigger exposure in the UK.

The reason for the takeover is thought to be a desire to own the lucrative Tyne Tees franchise, and it is likely that Channel will have to sell off the other franchises if the deal is to go ahead.

There are plans to sell Yorkshire and Granada to each other, effectively creating confusion in much of the north.

LWT will be sold to Pearson who are going to rebrand the station 'Thames'. Meanwhile, as the LWT name would now be free it will be sold to Carlton who can use it as the name for their London Weekday service.

Carlton Central and Westcountry will also swap names as distance is only relative, and Carlton want to compete in the midlands and southwest with the confusion that Channel will be causing in the north.

Meanwhile, the Channel Islands themselves will be broken up and sold to the highest bidder.
